Hotel in the Trevi's Fountain area

Hi, I am traveling to Rome with my family (2 adults and a 16, 14 and 10 year old) in early August and will be spending 4 nights there. I think we want to stay in the Trevi's Fountain area, but not sure where. Can anyone recommend a hotel to me that is centrally located, has a good breakfast and will not break the bank. It does not have to be a 4 or 5 star hotel, but it does need to be comfortable. Thank you!

Sarah, Trevi fountain was a good 10-15 min walk from the nearest metro and not easy to find. I don't remember a hotel. That being said, use Kayak.com or Tripadvisor.com and search for hotel by proximity. Kayak can help you book, or tripadvisor can point you to hotels and you can use their web sites if they have them, not unusual IMHO.

The trevi area is a great area to stay in. There are lots of hotels but don't go by the star ratings. These are not an indication of quality as they are here in the States, they are an indication of amenities like elevators or restaurants. You can use venere.com to look for hotels in the Trevi area and within your budget. You might also want to consider an apartment with 5 people unless you are willing to get two hotel rooms. Donna

I'd agree with Donna, the Trevi area is a great part of town to stay in . There are many boutique hotels in the area. In February we stayed at the Hotel Relais 41 and throroughly enjoyed our stay. I've met many folks staying in this area. You're about a 6-8 minute walk from the Barberini Metro station - just up Via Tritone. Or you can catch any number of buses up the hill: 52, 53, 116, 492, etc. In addition, you're about 10-12 minutes form the Piazza Spagna metro.

In May, 2007 3 members of my family stayed at the Fontana Hotel right in front of Trevi Fountain. We were able to walk everywhere from this location!!!!Took a couple of room changes the day we arrived to get the perfect room for us. The wine bar Salotto is wonderful!! The restaurant, Osteria Dell was almost next door to the wine bar. We never used public transportation until we were headed for the train station because we were able to walk !!!! No cars are allowed into this area but there are usually many people enjoying the Trevi Fountain.

If you don't have the RS Rome 2011 book yet, you should buy it. It's loaded with all sorts of info, not just on hotels, but on activities and logistics. It will be the smartest money you spend on your vacation. Happy travels.

If you do stay there, and are near the Pantheon (or just when you visit the Pantheon) some of the best coffee I had in Rome was at Tazza D'Oro. Try the granita, one of their specialties, but their caffé (espresso) is great too! If you can make it to the Pantheon mid-day it's very cool to see the light shining straight through.

I stayed in the Hotel Nazionale last summer and loved it. It is right on the square of the Italian Parliament and it is minutes to the Trevi Fountain, Pantheon, Campo di Flori and the best gellato shop in Rome. You can't get a better location the the hotel is superb!

As long as your children are active and happy to walk a lot, the Trevi Fountain area is a great area to stay. It will be a little quieter, and is so beautiful and fun to walk around in at night. It's not a short walk to the Coliseum, Vatican, etc, but isn't awful either. I don't have specific recommendations but just suggest looking at suggestions from others on here and looking at Trip Advisor. Also, like someone mentioned, consider an apartment for you all because it can make it cheaper and then you can buy groceries and cook at your apartment, also saving money.

OK John from the tiny State, and the best gellato shop in Rome, which one? St Crispins?
