Hotel in the Dolomites.

Hey All! We will be travelling through the Dolomite region of the Alps next June. We will have a car, and will also be taking along my elderly mother. I am looking for the perfect town/hotel in the Dolomite setting. We will be there one afternoon and one full day. The surrrounding "views" are what I'm looking for. I want to look out the window and say WOW! Any suggestions? All inclusive hotels are a good option as opposed to a larger town.

We stayed at Hotel Almhof in Kastelruth (Castelrotto) last month. Wonderful restaurant in the hotel. Great buffet breakfast. The rooms are very new and modern with a large balcony. Have fun on your trip.

A tiny, but gorgeous spot, to include if you are nearby:
Lago di Carezza. Google to check it out. Enjoy!

If you want to look righ tout your window and say WOW! I wouldn't stay in one of the towns. There are lots of nice hotels there, and some views, but not the WOW out your window that you would get up on Alpe di Siusi or outside the towns. We have had lovely views from our balcony at Pesnion Seelaus on Alpe di Siusi and at Garni Delta above Colfosco (in Alta Badia). I'm sure thee are other hotels with great views in those areas as well. But the place I want to try next is Hotel Chalet Gerard, above Selva di Gardena on the road climbing up out of the valley. They remodeled in 2010 and the new website does not yet show the views from the place, but here is an older photo: http://www.trivago.co.uk/wolkenstein-463221/hotel/chalet-gerard-139545 And this is what a local resident said of it on Tripadvisor: "The Chalet Gerard is approx 5 minutes drive out of the centre of Selva, up the road that leads to the Gardena Pass. "Is is a traditional chalet style building with amazing panoramic views over the Sassolungo mountain, Sella Pass and Sella mountain. "The family who run it (Gerhard with wife and daughters) are very helpful and pleasant "I don't know about the rooms, but the food is excellent - people from the village often drive up there for lunch."

We also stayed in the Alpe di Siusi but at the AlpenHotel, Panorama. A nice balcony to sit and take in the views. Wow! Also, the dining room has some great views while enjoying dinner and/or breakfast. If you stay at the Alpenhotel you are allowed to drive your car up there which is normally restricted for car travel. The place Lola wants to try sounds great too.

Great photos! I remember seeing Hotel Panorama and thinking how nice it looked. You have a view of Sasso Longo and Sasso Piatto in one direction, and the Schlern in the other---fantastic!

Thanks Lola. I decided to remove the link to the photos although I don't think the webmaster would mind but removed just in case. I have many more but posted the ones that I thought would help Rob decide whether or not it appealed to him. PM'd to him. I sent a link to these photos in June of this year to someone on these forums and after viewing the photos of the paratroopers she sent me a most humorous reply. She Wrote: "Now thats awesome..sitting in Italy sippin wine and having Italian men fall from the sky..:) "

My adult daughter and I spent 3 nights at the Haus Silbernagl in Castelrotto near Bolzano. The hotel is amazing. It even has an indoor swimming pool. The rooms were all beautiful wood paneling and the beds had down comforters. I believe all rooms had balconies, most with great mountain or village views. The breakfasts were very good with eggs and bacon cooked to order, if you wished. It was a 2 minute walk into the town and a 5 minute walk to catch the free bus to the cable car up into the mountain meadow. The owner, Petra, advised us every morning regarding what hikes to take in the mountains. I can't say enough good things about Petra and her family. They made this part of our holiday very special.

The Hotel Schmung does look nice doesn't it. The prices aren't all that bad since dinner is included. I am wondering about the road closure though. I thought that I read somewhere that you could leave the area during the day, but not arrive. The Hotel Schmung website says that you can leave or arrive any time of the day? Does that make since? Also, they are requiring a bank draft for reservations, is that common?

The AlpenHotel, Panorama is closed until June 30. They must close in spring after the ski season? I needed the rooms June 17-19.

Rob, when we were there in May ('07) many places were closed including the lifts. We hiked up the road that led to the Hotel. We did not have reservations nor did we have plans on spending the night there but decided to walk in and ask if they had a room available and they did. I don't think there were more than 10 people or so that were there for that night so it was nice and quiet. Sorry to hear they are completely closed for June. Maybe the one Lola mentioned will be opened. Good luck.

Most places in the Dolomite ski areas do close for a few weeks after Easter, but it would be very unusual for them to stay closed all the way through June. I see from the pricelist on their website that in 2010 they opened on May 1 for the summer season. It may be that they don't have prices for summer 2011 yet, or just are not taking reservations yet. In that case the web bookin gforms will show "no availabliity". Did you try e-mailing the hotel directly?

I did send a request directly to the hotel. This is the reply I got: "Good ivenig, The hotel Panorama is closed at the 30.06.11 Best Regarts Alpenhotel Panorama
sylvester regele" I assume that means it is closed for the month.

I need help from you Italy experts! Can someone explain this address? I am attempting to locate it on a map, but not having very much luck. Italy is very confusing to me! GARNI DOLOMITES Compatsch 15
39040 Alpe di Siusi - Alto Adige / Italy Thanks to all!

Ah, renovations. That would indeed require closure for the time. Compatsch is the little "village" up on Alpe di Siuisi. It is more like a ski resort base area than a village; there are a number of hotels there, a pizza restaurant, and not much esle that I can recall. Hotels within several kilometers or so could use a Compatsch address. Did you locate this one on Google maps? I'll try to come up with some hotel names that are in that area and offer good views. I seem to recall a Hotel Rosa but I'll have to confirm that. Also, there is a new one, Schmung, that looks quite appealing on the website.

Rob "Can someone explain this address? ... GARNI DOLOMITES Compatsch 15 39040 Alpe di Siusi - Alto Adige / Italy" I put Compatsch 15, 39040, Alpe di Siusi, Italy into Google Earth and it went right there. Taking the address you provide in reverse order, Italy (more likely Italia) I'm sure you know; Alto Adige (also known as Sud Tirol (umlaut over the u)) is the region, like Georgia is a state - lots of bilingual there as much of the population speak German as freely as Italian, look at the street name; Alpe di Siusi is the name of the town;
39040 is the post code, much like zipcode but placed in much of Europe before the town; Compatsch 15 is the street and number. Except in the UK and France most places put the street first then number. I hope that helps.... EDIT: taking direction from Lola who knows more than me, village instead of street....

Google maps has Algergo Zorzi at that address (Compatsch 15). I remember it as a fairly basic place, but it appears it has been completely re-built, opening December 2010. This place is between the Pension Seelaus and the "center" of Compatsch. If I recall correctly, it is a bit downhill and may not have the views of some of the other places. but it has been 10 years since I was last there and my memory may not be accurate! Their photos do not show much in the way of the views from their rooms. I did find Hotel Rosa: http://www.hotelrosa.com/en/ It looked very nice, but with 4 stars may be more expensive than you are considering?

My understanding is that the road closure does not apply if you have a permit from your hotel to drive there. Once you have arrived and parked, you are then subject to the driving restrictions (meaning you can't use your car to drive around the area during the hours the closure is in effect.) but you should confirm this with the hotel. The bank transfer dirrectly into their account is not all that unusual, especially for smaller places. I have done it to reserve an apartment in the past, but was not all that happy about it (most banks charge around $40 for an international interbank transfer.) Since they accept credit cards for final payment you might ask if you can secure your reservation that way (even though their website says otherwise.) there are also some nice places at the far end of Alpe di Siusi, the area called Saltria. I like the Berghaus Zallinger, in part because it is a working farm where they rais Tyrolian horses. but it may be too close to the mountain for good views-it is up at the top of a lift. You can see the panorama from there on their website. Or try Hotel Santner, which looks well situated for views of Sasso Longo and Sasso Piatto. http://www.hotelsantner.com/

The hotel looks really nice Rob! Congrats on completing that part of your trip planning. Did you see the post about the Aer Lingus airfare sale? May or may not be available for your dates but worth a look if you haven't already purchased!

I made the mistake of staying in a bed and breakfast that was quite a drive from a nearby town so we were unable to take nice walks. The area around Alta Badia was beautiful but there was bad ran storma that made driving quite dangerous. If and when I return to Italy I will stay in a town ( like what RS suggests) and then drive. Our B&B did not have the room we booked 7 months in advance and didn't care to discuss the issue. I was glad when we were on our way to Lake Como. In the Northern area of the Dolomites I found the people unfriendly and would not recommend La Villa.

rob, you have to stay in BOLZANO, it is beautiful and so romantic. I would say the Hotel Park Laurin is the best option. we loved it so much, we are going back in May. there is a museum where OTZI (the 5000 year old mummified body) was found by swiss mountain climbers several years ago. He is there, to see, completely intact, amazing! Hotel offers deals of all kinds, wonderful food. check it out. town square, Walther Plaza is charming, your Mother will love it!
