My adult son and I want to spend a few days on the Amalfi coast and are considering Sorrento. I know Sorrento is built on steep hills and I can walk a few steps up and down but could not do a large amount. Could you recommend a nice hotel with balcony/sea view the does not have a lot of steps?
Given your limitations you probably will have to stay in town, preferably in or near Piazza Tasso. The advantage of that is that you're within walking distance of the Sorrento train/bus station. The con is that there are few of the spectacular views that the Amalfi Coast is known for, because technically Sorrento is not on the A.C., although it is on the peninsula--check a map.
But the restaurants in town are fabulous and reasonably-priced, so I think staying in town is a no-brainer.
Thank you for the info. Also considering Salerno. Would that be a better option for balcony/sea view?
Strictly for balcony & seaview, in Sorrento you'd probably have to stay down by the marina. Views are gorgeous but you'd have to climb a hill to get up to the train/bus station in town. There are buses, however. In Salerno, as long as you find a place on Corso Giuseppe Garibaldi facing the lungomare and the sea, you can't much beat that, and you are within a flat walking distance to the Salerno Centrale train & bus station.
The center of Sorrento is relatively flat. There are 3-4 hotels close to the center on the bluffs overlooking the bay that might fit your needs, but my recollection is they're somewhat upscale and so probably pricy. Salerno is generally flat, but I haven't stayed there and so can't comment on sea view lodging options.
As far as choosing between Sorrento and Salerno, the "better" choice depends on what places you plan to see. It's easier to get to locations like Capri and Positano from Sorrento and easier to get to locations like Paestum and Amalfi town from Salerno.
Thank you for your informative info. Much appreciated.
