We are going to do a short trip to Sicily, which is just a part of a longer trip in Europe. Do the trains around Sicily require seat reservations, as we are getting a rail pass? Also, any good hotel in Palermo? Not a Hilton, but a nice clean one. We are open to staying anywhere in Sicily, if there is somewhere better for to be on a short trip. There looks to be some interesting smaller towns.
We stayed , at the Hotel Letizia in 2006. via dei Bottai, 30, Palermo and found it quite charming. Oh, and clean, too, as well as nice.
First, I will note that generally travel by train isn't recommended in Sicily, with a few exceptions, such as the route from Palermo to Cefalu. My guess is that no seat reservations are required on the local, regional trains, but would be for any faster, intercity trains, as is done on trains elsewhere in Italy, but I don't know for certain.
most people find that point-to-point tickets in Italy are a better deal than a rail pass. If the pass you're getting is one of the so-many-days-within-a-period passes then you might want to get fewer days on the rail pass and buy the tickets in Italy.
