Hotel in Rome and Venice

Planning a trip in May for Rome and Venice. I checked all of Rick Steve's recommendations in Venice and most are already sold out :( Any other hotel suggestions for Venice? We would like to be close to some good restaurants and bars (for after dinner drinks).

Also looking at Hotel Nazionale or Albergo Santa Chiara in Rome - Any thoughts on hotel in Rome?
Any help is appreciated!!

Try Ca' Bonvicini and Ca' Rezzonica in Venice.

Try Hotel Panda and Hotel Smeraldo in Rome.

Your best bet is to use booking.com, put in your filters, and see what is available. Then you can contact the B&B or hotel directly if you like - we like direct contact.

I have stayed at the Hotel Aberdeen and the Hotel Selene both a few both blocks away from each other and near the metro and near the termini station and near some wonderful churches.

No idea whether your standards are high luxury or low budget, but for Rome please consider 95 Rooms in Rome, in the Monti neighborhood. I stayed there in late October 2016 and it breaks the mold in showing that no, you don't have to spend $300 a night for a room in Rome. It's bookable on booking.com, check it out.

The Bauer is a great location but not inexpensive.

Venice-- stayed at Hotel Mercurio --- only place in Venice of which I have 1st hand knowledge--it was as part on a RS tour so it may be one you already tried ... would not hesitate to stay there again

Rome -- have stayed at Hotel Aberdeen and Hotel Adler-- both in same area --- chose the Adler for our 2nd trip as it was a better rate. Adler also has a nice little outdoor patio/terrace where you can have breakfast or use it any time of day

How long are you in Venice and how many are in your party? We were there only 2 nights and stayed at the Locando Leon Bianco. It's a B&B, not a full service hotel. However, it in located in a great area on the Grand Canal. You have to ask for the corner room on the top floor with 3 windows. It's the largest room and used to be on the website, but I don't see it now. People complain about the others. It's not a bad rate compared to others on the Grand Canal. It has great air conditioning and continental breakfast in the morning. Nobody is around in the late afternoon and evenings, so that would have been a concern if we planned on staying longer...go read TripAdvisors reviews.

Only staying 4 nights in Venice. just looking for moderately priced hotel- doesn't have to be super fancy. Is it better to have a hotel near the Grand canal? Thanks for the input!

It was our first time and I wanted to be on the Grand Canal, but not willing to pay the price in most hotels, so I settled happily with this B+Br. It's absolutely not necessary to be on the canal, as you don't really spend alot of time in your room...at least we don't. But I loved that we did it once. DH took video that we enjoy watching from that vantage point. One suggestion wr took and it's true. It's very crowded during the day. Turn away from the crowds and walk the other way. In 5 minutes, you will.have a magical Venice. I'd like to add if I was staying 4 nights I would want a full service.hotel, though

Since this is in Rick's book, I don't know if you've checked it out already, but I can recommend Hotel Campiello. On a quiet little square (not on the canal) close to the San Zaccaria vaporetto stop and about a 10 minute stroll to P. San Marco. We stayed there on our last visit, and will be there again in Oct. Check it out on TA, then see which booking agency is offering the best price ( it was hotels.com on the day we booked. A different one has the best price today).

Ca' Bonvicini is on a quiet small canal so you can leave your windows open ! I would be a bit hesitant to be ON the grand canal due to the noise of ALL of the boats, including the trash boats.....

In October 2015, I stayed 10 nights at Albergo Santa Chiara in Rome. I really liked it. Concierge service is fantastic. So close to Pantheon you can pop in every morning and evening. Short walk to Largo Argentina where many bus lines run & there is a taxi queue . There is a taxi queue next to the Pantheon too; but, then you pay for the time it takes the driver to go through all the side streets.
