hotel in Milan

My family and I will be starting our wonderful Italian trip in Milan for one night. This is so my husband can go to his favorite restaurant- Papa Francesco's near La Scala. This isn't a shameless plug - it really is that good! I need a hotel that is somewhat reasonable near the Duomo, Galleria, La Scala area. The hotels in R.S. Italy 2010 (many near the train station) are booked for end of May or not getting great reviews. Any ideas? I know I am asking for a lot for a little Euros... A Quad would be ideal

Good luck with the lot for a little in Italy, these days. You might want to try venere.com for hotels and it includes reviews. I have used them many times and have been quite happy with the service. I generally stay at the Hotel Berna, but it is not in your suggested area.

I have looked into Hotel Berna which as you said is not in our area. Thanks for the tip- I have a feeling we will be near the train station and cabbing it to Papa Francescos.

We really enjoyed Hotel Charlie (yes, that's its name) a few blocks from the train station, but that was back in 2003.

Hotel Berna is great! Clean, comfortable, and amazing breakfast buffet. We stayed there for 3 days last year.

The tram is easy to get from Hotel Berna, costs about 1 Euro, and goes right by La Scala. It is fun to ride and a big discount over a cab!

kim,

I stayed at Hotel London on my last visit, and would certainly recommend it, although it may not be considered in the "little Euros" category. It is within easy walking distance to the Duomo, Galleria, etc.

There's another good restaurant within about a two minute walk from the Hotel. It's listed in the Guidebook and I can dig the name out of my records if you're interested. There's also a restaurant directly across the street from the Hotel.

Happy travels!

I will second Hotel Berna. Stayed here in July 2009 and it is very nice with a great breakfast buffet. Only a few blocks from the train station.

One of the great evening passagiatta (evening stroll) in Milano is to cab over to the Navigli area for all sorts of nightlife. The area is a former industrial area with a canal in the middle of the street, former warehouse, etc. The zone is now loaded with clubs, restaurants, cafes, bars, gelatorias, and flea markets. it is completely safe and a great place to head to after dinner.

If you stay at Hotel Berna a great place for dinner is Ristorante Tre Cavilini. Turn left out of the hotel door and walk down the street a few blocks to Hotel Mediolanum and turn left onto Via Mauro Macchi and it is directly in front of you. Ask to sit in the courtyard (sul cortile). Great place.

If you g oto the area of La Scala from the metro you will go through the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele and look for the "torino" (little bull." Place the heel of your shoe on his ceramic testicles and spin for good luck. It is an old Milanese tradition. there is usually a crowd waiting their turn and taking pictures.

Buon viaggio,
