Hotel in Milan?

We will be spending 2 nights in Milan before starting a Rick Steve's tour. I'm wondering if anyone has a recommendation for a hotel that would be safe, convenient (to sights & the train) and not break the bank. Also, since this is our first trip to Italy and this is the beginning of the trip, we're looking for something that helps us get our feet wet without overwhelming us. We're well travelled, but for some reason I have some apprehension about arriving in a country without knowing the language or anyone. Thanks.

I always stay at the Hotel Berna - it is about 2 blocks from the main train station and meets your criteria. The area is very safe to walk around - I was a solo traveler and was fine walking around by myself. I found that you can always find someone who speaks a little English. At the Hotel Berna the staff is multi-lingual. -
you can read reviews of Hotels on Trip Advisor and I have found them to be a pretty good description - lots of photos too.

We found Milan to be more expensive than the other cities we visited in Italy. In Milan we stayed at the Hotel Spadari. It was a luxurious splurge for us and runs about $500 a night depending on the time of year. It was wonderful though and I would stay again in a heartbeat. It is about 2 blocks from the Duomo and subway. Right in the heart of the city. Their breakfast was included in the price and was probable the best we had in Italy. Check out the reviews along with those of other hotels on www.tripadvisor.com

Another vote for the Hotel Berna. It's close to the train station and safe.

OOPS! Hotel Spadari was around $500 for 2 nights, not one. Sorry!

Hotel Berna is on a street with tons of hotels! It gets good comments on this site. I've stayed in the train station area many times and always feel safe, in fact, I've only walked to the train station from my hotel one time without having the companionship of other rolling-luggage bearers.

Hotel Berna. We have stayed there many times over the years and we really like the place. It is about 400 meters from the Stazione Centrale on Via Napo Torriano 18. It is a 4 star property and serves the best breafast in Milano. Buon viaggio,
