We are planning a RS tour in late Sept. Flying into Madrid and would like to spend several nights to recoup from flight and see a bit of the center. Before continuing on to Varenna. Would someone recommend a hotel for close to the city center. We understand September can be challenging because of the many conventions. We will be arriving on a Friday. Perhaps it won't be a problem.

Some idea of what type of hotel you are looking for would be helpful - amenities, budget, etc. There are thousands of hotel rooms near the city center, ranging from small hotels (hostals) to big chains (Radisson, Ritz, Westin).

A hostal in Spain is indeed a basic budget hotel rather than a hostel (it's like pension or guesthouse in other countries). If you're looking for one in Madrid, I had a very good stay at the Hostal Acapulco, right in the center but on a quieter street (if it doesn't come up in English, click the flag to change it): http://www.hostalacapulco.com/

Jeani, do you really mean Madrid, or are you asking about Milano, from which you would "continue on" to Varenna? This is the Italy forum.
