You will be happier if you know you have a hotel to go to when you land in Rome. If you know the departure point of your tour, or can find out, book a hotel in that vicinity. I have found booking.com useful for this. September is a busy month in Rome so make haste.

Michelle, I assume that you have checked on the initial hotel from which the tour starts. Why not there?

The short answer is yes. You may have to work through the local TI or make a short list of hotels you are interested in using. The current discussion running about non-reservation vs reservation. Might find it interesting to read. It is Pre-Booking under General Europe.

Safe? Yes. But not necessarily low stress or low cost. The whole point of traveling without reservations is spontaneity. Since you know when you are going to be in Rome, there's no advantage to "winging it." And the general rule is that whether you want a €50 per night room or a €500 per night room, the best values at each price range get taken first. You may luck out, or you may end up paying more than you want or settling for something not as nice as you want. This is all particularly true in September, which is still high season in Rome. I agree that if you are using a tour, it's easiest to find out what hotel you will be staying at in Rome, then contacting either the tour company or the hotel itself and asking about adding some days. If that's not possible, or if the hotel is too expensive, then you really need to get busy now.
