Hotel in Florence near the airport

We are flying out of Florence and spending our last night there before an early am flight. We will have the rental car with us. Does anybody have any good recommendations for staying near the airport? Should we drop the car off early in the morning before our flight or the evening before when we first arrive?

Christina,

The airport is very close to town, so there's no reason to stay "near the airport". Enjoy an evening in Florence and take a cab to the airport in the morning. It would be a good idea to pre-arrange the cab the night before travel, since you have an "early am flight".

I always return the car the day before and take the taxi on the morning of departure. That is especially true if you stay in the city center of Florence, where vehicular access is restricted.
So my suggestion is to return the car upon arrival in Florence then take a taxi from the car rental office to the hotel where you spend the night. The next morning you take a taxi to the airport. Ask the hotel staff to call the taxi for you. I never had to wait for more than 5 minutes for a taxi to come, even if it wasn't arranged the night before, but you can have the hotel to pre arrange.
Florence airport is very small, so arriving at the airport 75 minutes prior to departure is more than sufficient. The airport is about 10-15 minutes drive from the city center.

We also drop the car at the airport then spend the last night in the center. It was 20 Euro fixed rate for a cab last time we did this. Last time we did this dropping a car was also a total nightmare not something I would do with a flight to catch. At that time we literally had to wait in a long line because no one could enter the lot when it was full till someone left even though that was the access to the car rental drop. I believe it has improved but efficiency is not the hallmark of this culture. I'd never leave it till the end. And why not enjoy a lovely stroll in the center of Florence the night before the flight and a nice dinner in town rather than being stuck near the airport. We have done this a few times in our travels and always regretted -- the worst being a place near the Zurich airport. Florence is lovely in the evening and the airport is nearby. Save the hassle though by not trying to avoid the ZTL dropping in town -- great way to end up with a cou ple of expensive tickets as well as charges on the rental.
