Hotel in Capri

My wife and I are ending our travels throughout Italy with four nights in Positano followed by one night in Capri in late May. I've done some research on hotels on Capri, but was curious if anyone could offer a recommendation. We would like a room with a view naturally, a nice breakfast, and walking hills/stairs are fine. I purchased the RS Naples & Almalfi Coast guide but hotels on Capri aren't mentioned. Before booking a room exclusively from the internet photos, I would welcome any personal experiences.

Tracy . . . Two years ago we had three absolutely wonderful days in Capri at Hotel La Tosca, Via Dalmazio. Birago, 5 - 80073, Tel. +39 081 8370989. This is a one-star hotel, but it was a five-star experience because of the owner, Ettore (I may have the spelling wrong). We arrived very weary and he insisted we sit down and enjoy a drink with him on his terrace before checking into our room. While we sat with him, he got out a map and designed a plan for us for each day of our visit. We followed it completely and we still look back on this as being three of our most special days in Italy. We had a double room for €125, incl. breakfast, no TV, lobby has free wi-fi. Our room was clean and comfortable, but nothing fancy, and we'd love to stay there again. Our room didn't have a view and I'm not sure if any of his do, but the terrace (where breakfast is also served) was wonderful for soaking up the views.

Nancy, Thank you for your detailed reply; this is a great starting point and sounds like a nice option.

I was in Capri in 2003 and I'm sorry I can't remember the name or the hotel, even if I did it was a while ago so the recommendation would be dated. When booking in Capri, there are two distinct areas. There is the harbor where the boats come in, Marina Grande. Our hotel was here and we enjoyed the view, looking out on the harbor and seeing the boats constantly coming in and out. There is a funicular that takes you up to Capri Town and there is a small fee to use the funicular. In general there is more to do in Capri Town, more restaurants, shops, etc. But we had no regrets staying in a hotel down by the marina. It actually made it easier when we had to check out and leave, just a short walk over to our hydrofoil back to Naples.
