Has anyone stayed at Il Faro in Sorrento? I'm considering it for 5 nights in Oct. but, it's a lot less expensive than most of the hotels in the area (85 euro for sea view room) and I must admit that I'm a little skeptical. Any info appreciated.
Google Street View will show it to you, so that you can weigh the advantages of being near the ferry versus the bus/train.
It will take 15 minute walk up hill to the town. Or you can take the bus. ( not sure how they run in the evening) Taxi will be a bit expensive ( for me). That maybe the reason why the rate is lower.
So, not having visited Sorrento before, do I want to be near the train or near the water?? Also, any recommendations for hotels thta you liked, here? Thanks!
Sorrento is on a bluff. The ferry area is on the water about a 15 minute walk down hill. At night, the ferry area restaurants, there are just a few, probably are nice; but, the town up on the bluff has a lot more going on. I dislike riding the CV and I dislike even more the bus ride to Amalfi. So I took ferries everywhere – except Pompeii, Vesuvius, Herculaneum for which the CV is perfect. That was not in October and I have no idea how/if the ferries operate then. I also had no issue with the hill up from the ferry, but I live with hills like that. One of the hotels that I used was the Hotel Sorrento City, it was an RS recommendation. It is the middle of town on a narrow heavily trafficked street. I have not been there in a couple years. I checked this Board's archives and there are several recent useful reviews of this hotel. The hotel has a web site and a Flickr page.
Thank you, Otariidae! I just emailed this hotel. It looks perfect. I think, perhaps, staying on the water is appealing but for our "running about" tendancies< I think being closer to the train, etc will be better. Thanks everyone for your help! I'll report back with a review and photos!
Hi Let me highly recommend Hotel Sorrento City as a wonderful travel base. 10 minute walk to bus and train, minutes from wonderful restaurants and shopping and a 1 euro bus ride to wharf-what else do you need? Ciao Mike
