Hotel Ideale in Assisi?

Has anyone stayed at this hotel? How were the owners? I'm looking at it because it's on Piazza Matteoti near the bus, but the only reviews I can find are on TA, which always make me hesitant (although many of the great reviews are from long time reviewers with many reviews). How is that location? Thanks!

Sorry, I haven't stayed there. It's above the more interesting parts of Assisi and the climb is rather steep at times. You are also on the opposite side of Assisi from the Basilica San Francesco which means long walk down and even longer walk back up. I stay at the Hotel Sole which is near Santa Chiara and on the flat road (think it's the only one in Assisi :) ), quite near the Piazza Commune. Excellent restaurant at the Sole by the way - real home cooking! My advice, check the street map and try to get a hotel closer to where you want to be spending the majority of your time because you'll be walking . . . a lot. And it is a beautiful place to walk!

Here's a vote for Hotel Palotta. It's a short distance east (uphill) from Piazza Comune, in the direction toward Piazza Matteotti. We liked the central location. A fun feature of the hotel is the common sitting room upstairs, providing wonderful views in all directions, of Assisi and the valley below. Proprietors Stefano and Serena are most accommodating. The family also runs the excellent La Palotta restaurant just below Piazza Comune.

I stayed at the Hotel Ideale two nights when I visited Assisi a long time ago (7 years ago).

The place is totally fine. I liked the fact that the hotel was right by the bus termini and in a quiet location away from the hordes of tourists swarming the church. The views at the top of the town were great too!

The family who ran the hotel at that time were really helpful.
I remember that they put me in a room in another building that was nearby (not in the main building). The room was just off the square and nice and quiet. Everyone goes to the breakfast room in the main building in the morning.

Personally, I enjoyed the stroll downhill to the church and passing all the stores on the way. Just remember what goes down must come up!

Theresa,

I stayed at Hotel Ideale last June and would absolutely recommend it. As you noted, it's in a very convenient location for accessing the bus, and it's also not a long walk into the main part of town. The room was very comfortable, the staff were great and the views were spectacular. The hotel seemed to be very popular so I was really glad I had pre-booked. During my stay, there were also travellers there from the Scandinavian countries and also a group of Harley riders (can't remember which European country they were from, possibly the Netherlands), who were on their way to some kind of big Harley rally in Rome.

Enjoy your stay in Assisi.
