Hotel for 3-nights

My wife and I be travelling to Rome and staying three nights prior to a western Mediterranean cruise and would enjoy seeing some recommendations for luxury/boutique hotels in Rome close to the center, near the Vatican and or close to shopping and great restaurants. Hotels with free breakfast, wifi and rooms that have some space would be great. Too often us larger Americans (6'4" 225lbs) end up feeling a bit cramped in small European hotel rooms like we discovered in France. Any suggestions are certainly appreciated.

There's no lack of luxury (expensive) hotels in Rome. Just take a look at www.booking.com. I stayed at the Hotel Barocco by Piazza Barberini once and it was very nice. As far as spacious rooms, that's a tough one because Rome is an old city with very old building stock. The room dimensions reflect that (some rooms are as small/ narrow as you would see in NYC). The only attribute that would make an otherwise small room appear bigger is high very ceilings (which some old hotels have). You can see the room sq. footage on the booking.com site and the hotel site for each room type selected - that will give you a better perspective.

Thanks Agnes. Yes, I have been looking at all the hotels through booking.com. It's like going to a restaurant with too many choices on the menu...

And it doesn't have to be expensive - some 4 & 5 star hotels in city center seem to have some fairly good deals on rates (Under $250/night). I'm just skeptical by nature.

The more filters you use for your search, the more that large menu gets winnowed down. Good luck!

Definitely apply filters. Booking.com also describes the square meters of the room, and if it is larger than average for the area, it will state that.

Thanks, applied filters and think we found a fairly nice Hotel; Relais Giulia. Thanks for all your comments, much appreciated.

Luxury Brunelleschi Hostel suite 160 E/night. Breakfast is served in a pass through to be eaten in the suite. Cold choices. Short 3 block walk from the St Peters. See on Booking.com I did not see any of the other guests so not sure why it is a hostel.

Hotel Palazzo Navona is a fairly new design
hotel in a great area. There are all sizes of rooms available. Nice rooftop deck with bar too.

You can go to Booking.com and enter a specific Rome neighborhood.
I always filter rooms from lowest price to more expensive. I then look for.cheaper rooms that have substantially better customer ratings than other like priced properties. And I often look at the same property in Trip Advisor to see the customer comments. I have never been disappointed despite staying in relatively inexpensive rooms.

We have recently stayed twice 400 meters from the Vatican in the Ottaviano/St. Pietro metro stop area--in B&Bs. It is a busy area with plenty of restaurants and an easy subway ride to Termini.I

Another room trick is to go to Google Maps online. You can hit + + + and it will magnify a city or specific few block area. Up pops restaurant and hotel icons in the area you can click on. It is a great way to find unknown rooms and restaurants in any area of neighborhood.
