We will be traveling by train from Rome to Assisi during the second week in April and would like to stay at a the closet hotel to St. Francis Basilica. Any suggestions??

Assisi is small, probably not much more than a mile end-to-end, so you'll be in walking distance of the Basilica with pretty much any hotel you pick. (I'm assuming no member of your party is physically handicapped.)
