We have chosen our hotels for both cities (and both recommended by RS!) and am wondering if anyone has stayed at either/both, and any advice or warnings?
They are Hotel Sonya (Rome) and Hotel Pendini (Florence), both mid-October......

We have used Hotel Sonya four times. It is our preferred hotel in Rome because my wife believes that they make the best lattes along with a great breakfast. The area around it is nice, a couple of good local restaurants, and convenient to Termini. Good choice.

We stayed at Hotel Pendini three years ago and would not stay there again or recommend it to others. The rooms were dark and the entire hotel had a strange odor, musty and bleach. The bathroom was tiny - even by European standards. It is located on a popular square which was very noisy at night. Sorry!

If you want a simple hotel with a great rooftop terrace in Florence, try Hotel Medici, about 2 blocks from the Duomo (to the south, on the way to the Uffizi). Centrally located, elevator, beautiful rooftop terrace. Breakfast is served but it's not something to rave about. The views, on the other hand, are great. No a/c, but rooms have fans. Mid-October should be fine. The cost for a single in July was 42 euro.
