We are going to Venice, Italy July 31. Could you please recommend a hotel that would be a good place to stay at a reasonable price (as we are a retired couple) to see the city. We would need one close to transportation. We are in our early 70's and this is our first visit to Venice. We ordered Rick Steves book on Venice and are waiting for it. We would like to make reservations as soon as possible. Thanks,
Charles Crawford
Hi Charles. End of July is the height of the tourist season in Venice and unfortunately it is quite late to be trying to book accommodations in such a popular destination. I always have stayed farther away from the Grand Canal, which is the primary transportation artery for the water buses (vaporetti), so you wouldn't be interested in my specific recommendations. However, while you wait for other replies, which I'm sure you will get, go to Booking.com and search for 'Venice' with your check-in/check-out dates. Each of the search results will have a little description saying things like "55 yards from St. Marks Square" etc. The area around St. Marks Square is crowded, but it would put you in close proximity to the main sites in Venice, including a vaporetto stop for easy transport along the Grand Canal and out to the popular islands of Murano and Burano. Lots of dining and shopping opportunities in that area as well. Very best of luck to you! I hope you have a great holiday in Venice.
Agreed. On such short notice, you're probably going to need to rely on some site such as booking.com or venere.com. Pensione Guerrato is wonderful but they don't have an elevator and they're probably booked. (Do you need an elevator?) Good luck. (And be sure to get someplace with air conditioning.)
Can you manage stairs? If so, a place we like very much is Pensione Guerrato. The staff are all very helpful, brekkie nice, reasonable for Venice prices, great location behind the Fish Market at Rialto. No elevator, great views for many of the rooms. I worry that your date is so close.
Thanks for the info--very helpful. As per your advice, we went to Booking.com and booked a ground floor room with air conditioning at Hotel Marte & Biasin. It is close to train station and vaporetta. Thanks for all the helpful advice.

Hotel Marte & Biasin gets absolutely dreadful reviews on Tripadvisor. A bad hotel can ruin your Venetian experience. http://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Review-g187870-d530281-Reviews-Hotel_Biasin-Venice_Veneto.html
