Hotel/B&B near Milano Centrale Station

My wife and I land in Milan late afternoon from our overseas flight. Then next morning we are taking the train to Monterosso. Since we'll be pretty jet-lagged will mostly be looking for a good place to crash that evening, though some good dinner spots nearby would be nice. Figure since leaving from Milano Centrale the next morning to stay near there, but also open to any other ideas (Figure we'll try to catch the train around 11 or 12 to Monterosso). With being pretty tired from our flight, easier is better for transportation that night. Thanks!

Hotel Berna is a short walk from Centrale. They do a good job and don't charge an arm and a leg.

I don't recall the exact name but it's the same as its address, Ristorante Settembrini (I think it's 18 but not sure), a couple of blocks from Hotel Berna,

Jed,

You might have a look at Hotel Garda as it's very close to Milano Centrale. When I was there last fall, I timed the walk to the station at about five minutes (once you know the way of course).

For the train ride to Monterosso, I'd suggest using a direct train as that's not only quicker but also avoids changes. There are several of those each day, and you might consider the departure at 12:10, arriving Monterosso at 15:03 (time 2H:53M, reservations compulsory).

If you're willing to commit to travel on that specific train, date and departure time you can purchase tickets in advance at considerable savings. The ticket cost will depend on how early you purchase, which is difficult to estimate without knowing when your trip will be taking place. The highest pricing tier is Base Fare and tickets in second class on that route are currently listed at €27.50 PP, so that's what you'd pay if you bought tickets after arrival in Italy.

In the morning before train departure, go to the Duomomplaza and find the Princi bakery nearby. You can buy wonderful focaccia sandwiches for the train (lunch).

Thanks all! Great suggestions, will explore these tonight. Sandwiches for the train (the direct train!), sounds perfect. Still waiting for our day to open up. Any rhyme or reason to when they open up dates for the end of June on these legs? Also waiting for Monterosso-Varenna.

Thanks!

Hi Jed. fyi, the discounts for advance purchase on the two routes you mention are fairly small; you may want to wait and buy your tix closer to travel date, or when you get to Italy. Up to you whether saving a few dollars is worth the hassle of buying in advance and locking in to an exact date and time. Enjoy your trip!

Jed,

The new rail schedules are updated about mid-June, so tickets for the routes you're looking for could be available at any time. As the previous reply mentioned, the discounts on the routes you'll be using aren't substantial so waiting to buy shouldn't be a huge financial hit.

Hotel Berna! We have stayed there many times and it is the only hotel we will stay at when we are in Milano.

BUON VIAGGIO,

Thanks Nigel, not sure how that happened! Deleted the other post. The website was pretty wonky yesterday morning, so maybe that caused it.

Thanks all for the suggestions!

The Garda and Berna are across the street from each other, the Garda is a bit less money. The Ristorante Cavallini is about 2 blocks away and quite nice.
