My husband and I will be coming from the Rome airport and want to drive only as far as Orvieto on the first day. We want a hotel very near the A1 highway so that it will be easy to locate and give us a quick return to the autostrada the next morning. Any recommendations for someplace clean with an included breakfast?

I hope you get more than one or two replies here.
But I suggest you also post that question here, they're more plugged into hotels over there.
The other thing you can do is do the free, 3 minute download of Google Earth (not Google Map) and then zoom in on the area of Orvieto next to the A1, enable the Lodging overlay, and you'll see all the hotels near the A1 in Orvieto, along with links to their websites.

What's interesting about Orvieto, is there is a hilltown and there is a town below the hilltown. The hilltown is not far off of the autostrada. There are good signs directing you up the hill to the hilltown. Hope this makes sense. We stayed at Hotel Valentino--www.valentinohotel.com We parked at a parkplatz down the street. This hotel had great a/c and a wonderful breakfast. I don't know of any hotels right next to the autostrada. Have fun on your trip!

We have been to Orvieto several times but don't want to drive up into the town. We just want a place to stay for the night so that we can simplify our exit and return to the A1.

I just checked the town's website at www.orvieto.it There seems to be at least two hotels close to the A1-- Here is the first one: http://www.hotelgialletti.itinfo@hotelgialletti.it Phone. +39 0763 301981 On their website it was noted that reaching the Hotel is very easy. Follow signs for the A1 autostrada exit for Orvieto. It is sign-posted from wherever you start. The Hotel is just 200 mt. from the exit on the road leading into Orvieto.
The other hotel is Hotel Kristal. Good luck and have fun on your trip.
