Hotel and Tour Info for Milan

I've about decided to take Chani's advice and head directly to Milan after our 2017 Village Italy tour, then fly from there back to the States. I'm thinking 3 or 4 days in Milan. Does anyone have a favorite RS style hotel? We don't need (or much care for) fancy touches or air conditioning, but we do like a clean room and a good breakfast - breads, cheeses and cold cuts, fruit, good coffee or tea.

Has anyone taken the RS recommended Autostradale walking tour? It looks like it would be a good overview of Milan, hitting all the major tourist attractions. It could be a good introduction to the city.

Thanks for your help.

I stayed my one night in Milan at Gran Duca di York near the Duomo. I ~think~ it might have been in Rick's book the year I stayed but don't remember 100%. I left for the airport very early so didn't have breakfast but the gentleman on the desk in the AM offered to fix me a cappuccino while I waited for the taxi! I thought that was very sweet, lol.

Hotel Berna is near the train station and has a very good breakfast.
I love Milano, but if I had four nights (not days), I would spend two of them in Bergamo or somewhere on Lake Como.

This past September we flew into Milan and stay at Hotel Berna which was very reasonable, clean and the breakfast buffet was wonderful. The hotel is also within very easy walking distance of the train station and the front desk was very helpful. Their website is: https://hotelberna.com/en/
We also did a wonderful city bus/walking tour that included tickets for The Last Supper that we enjoyed very much. It was through Ticketitaly.com. Here is there website: http://www.tickitaly.com/cart/index.php?dispatch=products.view&product_id=178&visit_date=08-09-2016
We were only in Milan for 1 1/2 days and saw all we wanted to see before heading to Lake Como but the Autostradale walking tour sounds good and then you could always double back to areas of interest since you will have additional time. We have also enjoyed bicycle tours in European cities and they are great fun. I do not know if this is your thing, or even if there is that option in Milan, but you could check.

We have stayed at both the hotels mentioned above and would recommend them. While Hotel Berna has a wonderful breakfast, a great location close to Milano Centrale, and helpful staff; we probably enjoyed the Hotel Grand Duca di York a bit more. Breakfast was still quite good, room was larger, and we walked to most all of the sights we wanted to see.

Would recommend taking into consideration which airport you will be flying out of to the US. We departed from Linate which was an easy 15 minute taxi ride from Hotel Grand Duca di York. Malpensa can be reached by train from either Centrale or Cadorna.

Many posters don't suggest spending much time in Milan, but we enjoyed 2+ days and found plenty to do and see.

Thank you all for the tips. I've looked up both of the hotels you've mentioned. Either sounds good, but I may look for something a little less expensive. I haven't delved very deeply into the hotels yet.

The tour that Stmurray2 mentioned also looks good, and comparable to the Autostradale.

I don't think we'll have any trouble filling 3 or 4 days in Milan, but I will look into Bergamo as an option. It looks like a more low-key destination. Hmmm, maybe Lake Orta to Bergamo, then on to Milan for the last couple of days?

Thanks again.

A vote for Bergamo as well. It's an inexpensive and easy trip from Milan, and the old part of the city (Città Alta) is a Medieval-era treasure.

We also used Tickitaly for a 2 1/2 hour walking tour that started by the Duomo and ended at the Last Supper. We were not impressed. There were no headphones involved, one had to try to be within earshot of the guide within a group of 24. That was usually quite difficult, especially being in a busy city. Some people were obviously along only to see the Last Supper at the end, and chatted their way through the tour making it even more difficult to hear anything. Sounds like a different one from the one mentioned above. We would have done the Walks of Italy tour where they have individual headphones and groups of 14 or less and very knowledgeable guides, but they were not available on the day we were there.
We went to Milan as a day trip from Varenna, so no hotel recommendations.

We stayed in Milan for two nights after our tour last month. We stayed at the Antica Locanda Leonardo which is RS recommended and very close to the Last Supper. It is a bit of a walk to the Duomo area, but we enjoyed getting to know a bit of the city that way. It is also 10 minutes walk to Cadorna train station from which we caught the express train to the airport.

We took the walking tour with Last Supper offered through City Wonders, also recommended by RS and it gave us a good overview.
