Hotel Alexandra

Hi, husband and I planning on spending a few days in Rome on a package with Tripmasters. Looking at cutting some costs on package and considering staying at Hotel Alexandra on Via Vittorio Veneto close to Piazza Barberini. I'm reading Rick Steve's Italy 2016 book, and I don't see this hotel or neighborhood listed and wondering if I can get some feedback regarding the neighborhood and staying here. Rick Steve outlines neighborhoods by Pantheon, Trastevere, and by Ancient Rome. So want to make sure this is a good location and area to walk to a lot of the sights. Thanks in advance.

They're generally positive, and you have to toss off some from ultra-picky tourists on both and one-time posters on TA. Lots of positive comments about the location, and I wouldn't have any hesitation staying there myself. We've stayed a few blocks south of there and had no complaints about the area. Ability to walk to "all" of the sights depends on what sort of walkers you are? What is walkable to one person may not be to another but with just a few exceptions, we've gotten around Rome almost entirely on foot and enjoyed every minute of it.

You will be very close to the Barberini metro stop on line A: useful for jumping on to get to sights close to other metro stops. You will have to change to the B line at Termini to get to those further to the south, like the Colosseum. It's not difficult to do, though. Line A is red on the map in this link, and line B is blue:

A note concerning comments about rooms being small? We've found that European city hotel rooms - unless you go to a premium level - are very often much smaller than we're used to the U.S. so it's not necessarily a failing of this particular accommodation.

I stayed at Hotel Modigliani just up (literally up) the road from the Alexandra. The location was fine. As a woman traveling solo, I had no problems going out to dinner in the neighborhood at night and walking back alone. The location was great for me - as Kathy says, there is no "perfect" location in Rome, the sights are just too spread out. Having the metro nearby and a couple of bus routes was very good for me. There's a Despar supermarket a block or two away, and I picked up some food there for lunches and even a supper or two in my room and a bottle of wine (inexpensive and quite decent). I went out to dinner twice at places my hotel recommended, Il Giardino (great food, lovely waiter, decent prices) was great, La Scala was poor (mediocre food, overpriced, poor service). I'm planning to stay there again on my upcoming visit in February.

I haven't stayed in that neighborhood, but have walked through it a few times and would have no concerns about staying there. No neighborhood is convenient for everything but this is within walking distance of several places you probably want to go, as well as the Metro option.

Well served by metro and many buses. Lots of restaurant choices in the area and major shopping area.
