Hotel advice for Rome

Ciao Fellow travelers,
My husband and I are planning a trip to Rome next year I was starting to search for hotels. I am looking for a hotel that is quiet. In RS guide book I found Hotel Due Torri . It is described as being located on tiny quiet st. Any advice and suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Val.

We have stayed at Hotel Due Torri several times and like the quiet location. Breakfast is included and it is a nice buffet. The rooms are not large but comfortable with ensuite bathroom. It is an easy walk to Navonna, Pantheon, Spanish steps and there are some good restaurants within walking distance. The hotel has an elevator.

I always stay at budget hotels near the main train station - because I can get on a train, or the metro at this station, or walk to the colosseum area.... I see that the hotel you mention is in this area.....

Couple of places I have stayed in this area: Sonya, Contila, Aberdeen - you can use google or tripadvisor to find several hotels in all price ranges in this area.
PS: have always felt very safe walking alone in this area day or night.

We have stayed at Hotel Fontanella Borghese many times and have always been pleased. While it is not "luxury", it is very nice and the location is great. The staff is very friendly and helpful. You can walk to Spanish Steps, Pantheon, Nuvona, even Vatican city. They are a sister hotel to Hotel Due Torri. We always send an email directly with our request for a booking and we get an answer back in 24 hours or less. If you stay there, ask for a room overlooking the courtyard as rooms overlooking the side street can get noisy. The web site is www.fontanellaborghese.com. Check it out and see what you think.

Those budget hotels near the Termini are not convenient to Pantheon, Navonna, Campo Fiori, etc. The choice of restaurants is very limited in that area. We stayed at the Aberdeen once years ago and it was very noisy--room overlooked a seedy vacant lot and noise from Via Nazionale was awful.

Since 2009 we've stayed at a really great b&b called Armonio Al' Opera, located across the street from the Roma Opera House on Via Viminale. The rooms are spacious, extremely clean, and the owner speaks English. It's a 5 minute walk to the metro at Piazza Repubblica, the restaurant downstairs, Al' Amtraciana, is one of our favorites. We especially like the pasta Amatriciana and the staff is very friendly. The neighborhood is quiet, but you are not in the center of the city.

If you are traveling by train it is a 10 minute walk from Stazione Termimi or a short cab ride.

Buon viaggio,

That is the same location as Hotel Sonya directly across from the Opera House. Nice area. Over the years with multi trips we have used the same three hotels recommended by Frances. Our favorite is Sonya because my wife thinks that their lattes are better than Aberdeen. If so, the margin is very, very slight. We use the Contilla if we are just overnighting in Rome because it is closest to Termini and a self laundry across the street. Their breakfast is so, so. The Aberdeen is excellent so weigh the above description carefully as I don't think it fits our experience with Aberdeen. There are many excellent restaurants in the area -- both white table cloth or a quick pizza and beer.

There are some who like to rip on the Termini area but we like it. It is highly commercialize as expected around a major transportation hub. It is full of hotels, restaurants, and shops with lots of street activity. It is on the SW corner of the major tourist sites so not quite as convenient as something in the center of Rome. It is an hour hike to Vatican but everything is still in walking distance. One big advantage comes with being the hub of the public buses. You can wonder all over Rome and catch a bus home from just about anywhere. You can catch any bus that says "Termini" or "via Termini" and you know where are you are going without consulting a transit map. A high percentage of the buses route through Termini. And the same for taking a bus in the opposite directions.

Another option we have used several times is renting apartments. I have found the apartments are just as affordable as a hotel. We have stayed twice in Trastevere on Piazza di Santa Rufina lovely area and close to a tram and bus stops.

My husband and I also stayed at Hotel Fontanella Borghese in April. It was a great location, we also walked everywhere, if you like to walk it's perfect. We had a courtyard view, the room was a good size, breakfast was included, and the staff was very helpful. The only downside for us was that we felt the pillows were a little too firm we are used to soft pillows, other than that it was great!

Enjoy your trip.

Take a look at these two hotels:
1. Hotel Napoleon in the Termini Area;
2. Hotel Smeraldo about a 10 minute walk to the Vatican.
Both were very clean and comfortable.

On our trip to Rome in April 2018, we spent 6 nights at the Hotel Hiberia 2 blocks south of the presidential palace and within sight of the Victor Emmanuel memorial. In spite of the busy street, the room was very quiet. The room was on the fourth floor and had two windows. Each window had two double pane glass windows. When we closed both sets, it was silent. We really enjoyed this hotel.

Book six months in advance to get a good price.

We stayed at the Hotel Raffaello. It was an easy 5-6 block walk from the train station, and an easy walking distance to the Colosseum and other sights. It is in a quiet area, with quite a few "off the beaten path" restaurants that aren't touristy. Beautiful rooms , pillow menu, and a delicious breakfast included. They upgraded us and treated us to a bottle of wine when they found out it was our anniversary. I would definitely recommend it and stay there again if we return to Rome.

We have stayed at Hotel Smeraldo which is close to Largo Argentina and Campo di Fiore. Rooms were smallish but it was fine and had great A/C. Also have stayed at Hotel Italia off Via Nazionale and closer to Termini. This was also a nice place to stay. Have have rented 3 apartments in Rome too--1 near the Pantheon and 2 near Piazza Navona. Depending on how long you are going to be here that could be an option for you too.

Just recently returned from Rome and we stayed at the Hotel Scalinata Di Spagna. It is at the top of the Spanish steps. A lot of restaurants in the immediate area. Close to everything with maybe the exception of the Vatican.(Although we walked there in about 20 minutes.) Great breakfast buffet, and very helpful staff.
