hostel convent experence

I plan on a week or more in May in Rome. I have stayed at hostel near train station and it was a convenient location and a good experience. My last trip to Rome I got a good feel for getting around via bus and foot. This trip I would like to experience staying at a convent. Any pro - con suggestions/ Thanks, John PA

There are lots of convent/monastery/religious guest house choices in Rome. Try santasusanna.org or monasterystays (don't remember if it's .org or .com). I stayed at a convent near the Colosseum a couple of years ago, it was simple but very nice.

On our first trip to Rome, in December 1984, we stayed at a convent. The pros: it was very cheap and very clean. The bathrooms were down the hall, but there weren't many guests, so we never had to wait. I don't know how I'd have felt about it at a busier season. I assume that you're young; at my present age, I wouldn't consider anything but private facilities. The cons: the one issue, more for my daughters who were teenagers at the time than for us, was that the convent had a curfew, 11 or 12. It meant that on Christmas Eve we had to forego the experience of hearing a special musical program at one of the churches. The funny thing was that my daughter, who was fluent in French (no one there spoke English, and we had no Italian), was able to negotiate getting a key, so that we were able to celebrate the arrival of the New Year. Anyway, if it matters to you, check on the curfew question.

Convents are a little quiet for me. My prerequisites are a clean room with Wifi and a television. I would think Wifi and television are seldom seen in convents.

Televisions are seldom in the rooms in convents. Many convents/monasteries have rooms with private baths, so that should not be an issue. If you need a key to extend the curfew for some special event, they will probanly give you one.
