hoping to explore Sicily with an RS tour next October... a couple questions

we are hoping to explore Sicily with an RS tour next October... a couple questions

When should I reserve spots on an RS tour for October '24, do they book up early? this will be our first RS trip.

I'll likely book air 5-6 months in advance. If I booking multiple-city flights from the US (most likely on United). Assuming the 2nd leg of the trip in and out of Sicily would be on a smaller airline. Would our luggage be limited because of the regulations on the smaller airline or would the major airline that we book with override the problems and allow of larger luggage?

thanks in advance!

I wouldn't wait to reserve. One October tour is already waitlisted.
From the FAQs:
What is your cancellation policy?
Tour deposits  are 100% refundable for up to 120 days before the tour departure date or unless otherwise noted in our Tour Conditions.

Luggage rules/costs vary by airline.

If you can book a single ticket from your origin to Sicily, the more restrictive baggage policy would apply.

Hi Hickory. When we went on this tour about five years ago, we booked non-stop airline tickets from US to Rome and return. We then booked Ryan Air from Rome to Palermo (leaving plenty of time) and Catania back to Rome (stayed in Rome a number of days.) Both airlines had different luggage requirements. We paid extra on Ryan Air so we didn’t have to worry about weight/size and it was still quite inexpensive. Very easy. Also, we always book a tour once we’ve firmly decided on a tour/date. Great tour! Enjoy!

Book now if you have specific dates. We just did this tour in June. The smaller luggage limits will apply. We used only a carry-on for 3 weeks, RS Sicily tour and a week in Rome on our own, and it went just fine. We flew on United, Chichago O'Hare to Zurich and Swiss Air to Palermo, no issues. We then booked a separate 1 way ticket from Catania to Rome. Rome to Chicago direct.
