Hop On Hop Off buses in Rome

I thought I had read comments some time back that the HOHO buses in Rome were no longer operating. But I see that Viator is still selling tickets. We waited too long to book a walking tour in Rome and thought the HOHO might at least give us the lay of the land.

Interesting... I'd read the same thing!

Any good travel guidebook will help you with doing your own walking tour.

Some of the ho-hos have been discontinued. The RS walking tours are great.

I've seen at least three different company HO HO this week.
One vendor's rates are 24E for the 24hours.

I'm in Rome at the moment. They are operating. Can't tell you companies though as haven't looked closely.

I am also in Rome right now and they are on every corner.

Hoho buses in Rome are definitely worth it. You get your bearings, see all the sights and then revisit your favourites.

The only bus that is out of business is the 110 open bus. They closed in December.

The HO/HO buses don't take you past "all" the sites in Rome. A lot of the most visited sites are in pedestrian zones so it's impossible for the buses to take you there or even get close to. The ones I can think of off the top of my head are the Trevi fountain, the Spanish Steps, the pantheon and the piazza Navona. You're dropped a few blocks from these and must walk to get to them.

All in all, the HO/HO's in Rome are not a great value and with the long lines often encountered in summer they make them not worth the time and money. If you want to get around the city just take a regular city bus. You won't get the commentary but you'll see the same things and it will only cost you 1.50 euros.

One year we arrived in Rome after an exhausting 9 day road trip in Sicily. We had been to Rome before but were too tired to explore it further. We bought a two day HO/HO ticket and thoroughly enjoyed the journeys. Worked perfectly for us.
