Hop on hop off bus tour in Rome

Hello,
Merry Christmas to all of you! And happy new year in advance.
We will be visiting Rome from 16/5/2020 to 18/5/2020. We have booked one colosseum walking tour in the afternoon of 17th and we will be staying near the Spanish steps. Is it worth seeing the city of Rome in a Hop on hop off bus in the morning?

In my opinion, no.

Other than the Colosseum and the Forum, not that many sights can be seen from the bus. The sights they list are stops for those sights, basically drop you off on a corner a few blocks away. Most of the best sights are in Pedestrian areas and best done by walking, and are in a fairly compact area. If you have a Rick Steves guide that includes Rome, it has a great walk laid out that hits most of the big sights. That would be a better use of time, and for a fraction of the cost, you could stop for coffee a couple times as well.

You might want to consider a golf cart tour instead. On our first trip to Rome, we also were only there for two nights so we took a golf cart tour. We found it to be a good way to get a good overview of the major sites in one day. The tours are pricey - 300 to 400 euros for 5 hours - but we thought it was well worth it since we had so little time in Rome. The golf carts can go in the pedestrian only areas where buses cannot go and can take you pretty much anywhere in the historic center as well as to the Vatican. Our driver customized our tour for us.
