We have 2 days in Rome at the end of our Italy Adventure (Venice, Naples & Rome) arriving on a Sunday. We're going an an early tour of the Vatican on Monday morning. On Sunday when we arrive considering a hop on/hop off bus to see most of the sights since we have limited time and Rome is so big wanting your thoughts. Thanks.
I have found from experience to only take a HoHo Bus in cities were the traffic is not heavy. Therefore, we have only take it rarely.
I have been to Rome twice and didn't take it then. You can navigate Rome by walking or taking the subway.
It's not worth it, as the bus has to stick to the main roads and doesn't get near the actual sites such as the Pantheon, Trevi Fountain, etc. Central Rome is very walkable, so just get a good map and enjoy strolling. You can spend the money you saved on gelato and "cut pizza", both great for handheld consumption.
Thanks for the responses - my friend has back pain so figured we would do some light walking that day and as Rick has said when in Rome he as used taxis as needed.
Might consider a golf cart tour -I would guess those can get a bit closer to sights
But really the historic center is pretty compact and best seen on foot
Use RS Heart of Rome walk
Hoho is worthwhile to get a first orientation. You can see the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, the Colosseum, the Circus Maximus, Piazza Venezia, and then ride through the city to Castel Sant'Angelo (which is on the other side of the river). St. Peter's Basilica can only be seen from afar. The rest of the route is also quite nice, but I think It's better to get off at Castel Sant'Angelo and walk from there. It takes about an hour to walk to the Spanish Steps. You'll pass Piazza Navona, the Pantheon and the Trevi Fountain. More about Hop on/off in Rome
