Honeymoon: Venice, Lake Como, Florence, Amalfi

Hey everyone - my husband and I are planning a honeymoon in late May - early June. We are flying into Venice / out of Naples. Right now we are tentatively planning: 2 nights Venice, 3 nights Lake Como, 3 nights Florence, and 3 nights in Amalfi, and plan to travel by train to each destination.

We are considering skipping or shortening the Lake Como stop in favor of more time at one of the other destinations as it feels like we may be moving around too much. We’ve both been to Italy before - I have been to Florence, but otherwise these will all be new destinations for us. Any advice on whether to skip or shorten Lake Como (or one of the other stops) would be appreciated! Thank you!

Because of the time and effort it takes to get to Amalfi I would add at least a night there

Depending on your departure flight time you may need to stay in Naples night before

Venice could use another night

3 locations in 11 nights would feel just right to me

You’ll need to narrow itinerary down soon and get accommodations booked ASAP, especially Amalfi

Lake Como is about 45 miles north of Milan, and it's up on the Swiss border. Your time might be better spent going from Venice to Florence and then 165 miles down to Sorrento/Amalfi.

Are you going to be skipping the most important travel cities of them all, Rome? It's worthy of 4 nights minimum on its own.

Let me warn you about flights out of cities like Naples. They're often going out at 6:00 a.m. What the flights do is take you to another big city gateway European airport where you'll sit for 4-5 hours until a flight going to North America leaves around noon or shortly thereafter. I refuse those early morning flights--choosing to go out around 8:30 or 9:00 a.m. instead.

I love both Venice and Lake Como. I would encourage you to keep those destinations. They are beautiful and relaxing, and in Venice, it's easy to get away from the crowds and enjoy the scenery and sunsets on the back canals.

I was, however, very disillusioned with the Amalfi Coast because of the congestion and crowds. We were there May, 2023, so our experiences are recent. The infrastructure has been sadly neglected, and it's not like moving around in northern Italy. There's no fast nor efficient way to get anywhere. Transportation is chaotic. Things just don't work smoothly. It's a victim of its Instagram success- there's no shoulder season and the AC is crowded spring and fall.

For your trip, it's going to take most of the day to get to Amalfi, so that's first night. Then a day to explore, second night Then about half a day in the AC and then back to the Naples airport the night before your flight. Is that much moving around in congestion worth it?

I'd recommend skipping the AC for now, and do a future Rome and AC trip. You really need about five days to get into the area, explore, and get back out to your exit airport.
And as someone has already hinted , the AC gets booked up 6-8 months out, so you may have problems finding accommodations , except at the highest prices.
Congrats on the wedding, and I wish you a relaxing honeymoon. Keep us posted as your planning evolves.
Safe travels!

Agree with Pat about skipping the Amalfi Coast for two reasons. The first is the distance involved in getting there, and the second is the limited amout of time you have.

Two nights in a location really means you only have one full day and parts of the arrival and departure days. And you will lose at least a half to three quarters of a day each time you relocate. The amount of actual travel time is just part of the relocation. There's packing up, checking out, getting to the train station, and waiting for the train. Upon arrival there is travel time getting to the new hotel and checking in. You want great memories of time together -- not just blurred memories of getting from place to place.

After the stress involved with most weddings, you'll want (and probably need) time to relax and Venice and Lake Cumo are both great for that. Love long and prosper
