Honeymoon Itinerary - Italy, Switzerland, Germany

We have finally nailed down our honeymoon itinerary and wanted to get some input on our locations, activities, and timing. We have done a lot of research to make this the best trip possible with the time we have (16 nights).

Day 1: Arrive Florence 6pm

Day 2: Florence sightseeing, evening drive to Umbria house for a week

Day 3-8: Day trips around Umbria / Tuscany (Siena, Assisi, Lago Trasimeno, wine tastings, cycling, horseback riding, etc.)

Day 9: Venice

Day 10-11: Cinque Terre (staying in Monterosso)

Day 12: Milan

Day 13-14: hiking in Gimmelwald, Switzerland

Day 15-17: Munich (flying out of MUC on day 17)

Anything we should change? Any suggestions of things we should not miss in these areas? We sort of crammed Venice in there because I really wanted to go back (spent a day there about 10 years ago).

ETA we will have a car for the week in Umbria but will otherwise be relying on trains & busses.

Many thanks for your help!

You're giving some of the best towns only 1 day. That's the problem I see with this itinerary. Shorten your stay in Umbria, spend at least 2 days in venice, bypass Milan, spend at least 2 days in Gimmelwald (the most beautiful place on the planet) and then head to Munich.

It helps to think about your trip in terms of nights as then you can more easily see the parts where you don't have enough full days to make a place work and worthwhile.

  • You are giving Florence one day... a jet lagged day. That's fine but realize you are limited in what you can see/do in Florence. Are you familiar enough driving in Italy to make a late day drive to Umbria and find your house? Sleep Florence one night,

  • Umbria: 7 nights in the house in Umbria. Nice base and very relaxing. I am guessing this is set and fixed and an immovable reservation. Sleep 7 nights

This last half is where your trip gets overly complex and busy.

  • Venice: So you mean to get to Venice on Day 9, "see" it and sleep there one night, then go across the country to the CT on Day 10 for two nights? Most of Day 9 will be a transit day and so will day 10. 3 nights Venice and CT combined and they are 6 1/2 hours apart by train. I'd pick one. What time of year are you going? Venice deserves 3 nights as does the Cinque Terre for the effort required to get there.

  • Milan: Why? You could spend Day 12 getting to Gimmelwald and sleep there 3 nights so that you have two full days to hike.

  • Munich: You will spend much of Day 15 to get there, sleep two nights, one day to "see" it as you fly out on Day 17, Do you have to go to Munich? You could skip that and add time to the Berner-Oberland and make your CT and Venice segments work better.

Thanks so much for your thorough suggestions!

We decided to nix Milan and do 3 nights in Gimmelwald. Seems so obvious now that you mention it :-)

Our Umbria house is a one-week fixed stay, but we are getting it for free from a client, so wouldn't feel too bad leaving a day early and doing an extra night in Venice. We will strongly consider this!

My fiance is really excited about going to Munich, and since our flights are already booked we're leaving that as it stands.

Thanks!

Venice and Gimmelwald are two of the most beautiful places you will be visiting. Yes, devote extra days to them. You'll be glad you did!
