Honeymoon in Sorrento

Hi all,

My fiance and I are planning on going to Sorrento for our Honeymoon. We will be going at the start of September for 10 days. I've always wanted to go to Italy as we are both into our food & wine, so it seemed perfect and romantic for us.

Does anyone have any recommendations for things to do whilst there? The best places to visit for day trips, great restaurants, places to stay? Any little bars etc etc? Anything particularly romantic to discover?

Thanks in advance!

You will love the Amalfi Coast for your honeymoon !

Take the bus to Amalfi and change buses to go to Ravello - delightful town on the hill. Then hike down into Minori.
Hike the spectacular Path of the Gods - look at pathofgods.com or neverendingvoyage.com for specific information.
Take the cooking class at Mama Agata in Ravello - her lemon cake is to die for!
Ride the ferry on the coast - you could catch it in Amalfi and ride to Positano for a wonderful afternoon discovery of both villages.
Ferry to Capri and Ischia. If you go to Capri, make sure you google all of the hikes on the island - they are wonderful and keep you away from all of the crowds. The views are amazing !
Go to thriftygypsytravels.com to review their cool swimming spot they found out of Sorrento - the Bagni della Regina Giovanna.
Look at bestofsorrento.com for other great ideas.

Best wishes on your marriage! You are picking a great place for romance! September is a great time to visit Campania...I only visit Italy in September or October.

If going in early September will still be hot and you will most likely want to swim. Sorrento has no real beaches, and the artificial ones are very difficult to access, particularly getting back UP. Positano is a great town to go swimming; easy access but you will always need water shoes in this region....I take $10 flat ones that fit easily in my suitcase..you won't find them locally at that time of year, they will be sold out! :)

10 days in Sorrento IMHO seems like a long time. And it means you will be taking ferries all around just for a few hours of exploration in other towns. Capri and the A/C are far more interesting and romantic than Sorrento so why not spend more time there?

I suggest 3 nights in Sorrento to relax and get over jetlag at the start of your trip, you can see Pompeii or Herculaneum during these days if that is appealing...then pack up and go to Capri for 2 nights, take ferry from Capri to Positano or Amalfi for 2 nights, spend your last night in Naples if you have an early flight from there...see the archeological museum for the artifacts removed from Pompeii and Herculaneum. If you do not have an early flight return to Sorrento for your last night if that appeals or stay the last night on A/C if you have an afternoon flight home, otherwise it is best to be IN the city you will fly from.

Enjoy your romantic Italian honeymoon...wherever you settle you will love it!

I do agree with JJ in that 10 days using Sorrento as a singular base is a long time. A couple days in Capri or Positano, both of which are different than Sorrento, could break it up a little. Both are more picturesque IMHO.

On the other hand, if you establish yourself in a real nice hotel or B&B in Sorrento that you love, you simply cannot find a better logistical spot for daytrips to Naples, Pompei, Ercolano, Salerno, Paestum, and then the whole A.C. from Positano all the way up to Vietri sul Mare. I thought the food in Sorrento was excellent. Up in the old town, TavernAllegra, Il Leone Rosso, Zi'intonio, all are places with spectacular cuisine. LiGalli Bar near the Sponda bus stop at Positano was the only thing open in March, and we had a wonderful alfresco lunch there. Fabulous. If you like calamari, the peninsula has some of the freshest and best squid in the world.

Enjoy your planning!

We've been to Sorrento twice for 8 nights (7 full days) twice and it was not too long... we were sad to leave. There are so many fun things to do, including just hanging out in Sorrento (wonderful, charming town) and relaxing, that 10 days is not too long imo. I don't like changing hotels if it's not necessary. In addition to all the great places to go that RS writes about in his Italy guide, we stay at Hotel La Tonnarella which has a private beach that we really enjoy. They have lounge chairs and food / drink service from their great restaurant... we buy large beach tubes (rings) in town and relax in them in the Med. Heaven. There are other ways to swim in the Med if you don't have access to a beach... there are piers that have lounge chairs and public swimming / lounging.
I'm not a fan of Capri but twice we've rented a small (nice) boat by the docks - called Banana Boats - that you drive yourself, we go around the island leisurely stopping to swim here and there. Very affordable and fun.

The amalfi coast/sorento is a magic place. so much to see.
we just spent 5 or so days in sorrento and then moved down the coast to amalfi for another 3. the whole area ( sorrento capri positano etc )was much heavier with tourists than 3 years ago ( at the same time of year)
we just caught a train from solerno to milan today.
be careful what people say about 'just catch a bus' or 'just catch a ferry' to travel between towns. one of our days the ferry from sorrento to positano did not operate. the sita buses were PACKED.( really PACKED) we got around by private car ( 5 of us made it reasonable)
even then it took over 1.5 hours to travel from sorrento to amalfi.
so keep your plans 'real' , as cruise ships and tourists can make your plans more difficult.
do a search on the tab above for previous posts.

hope this helps.

Why did you choose there? There are countless things to do and see, but it's best to start with a guide book so you have the general idea and can then pinpoint to your interests. I agree that 10 days would be too long in Sorrento for me. I like a change of venue in the evenings so I can try different restaurants without worrying about transport, which is a main consideration in the area.

Lots of great restaurants in Sorrento, much more than 10 days worth. Transport is super easy. I highly recommend getting Rick Steves Italy guide. It is filled with invaluable info on Sorrento, the Amalfi Coast, where to go, how to go, etc... everything you'll need to know to have a great time in Sorrento. No one here can post all the info he has.

Hi everyone,

Firstly, thanks so much for everyone's feedback!!

Carla, that all sounds wonderful! I will absolutely check out the Path of the Gods! All of the information you have given is amazing, thanks!!

JJ-nowVoyager, thank you! My fiance isn't a fan of swimming, so a beach isn't the most important thing to us, although I would still like to visit them. Jet lag also won't be an issue for us, as we are from the UK so it's only a 2 hour flight and they are only an hour ahead of us. My only thing is that I wanted to use Sorrento as a base as I don't like moving around hotels, I like to get settled and then go exploring, but it is something I will look into for sure!! Thanks again for all of your wonderful suggestions!

Jay, thanks!! I think I would love to have Sorrento as my base for day trips etc! Food is an important part of the trip to us, so knowing that Sorrento is excellent for food! Thank you for all of your lovely tips!

Susan, I'm glad that you have said that, I was starting to worry that 10 days would be too long, but we are planning on using it as a base as we don't like to keep changing hotels etc!! I've looked up the hotel you have suggested, but unfortunately it's sold out for our dates :( I will deffo look into the boat hire for Capri! If we do decide on Sorrento, I will deffo be purchasing Rick's book, I've heard great things about it! It's great to hear about the lovely restaurants too as that's a biggie for us! Thank you so much!

glennlorrainer, thank you for the tips on getting around! I'm hoping by September the tourists may have thinned a little due to the kids being back at school, but as I've never been I'm not sure if this would be the case.

valadelphia, we chose here because out of all of the A/C, it seems to be more reasonably priced, plus it's a slightly bigger place than Amalfi and Positano (to my understanding anyway). I have researched the area, I was more asking for advice from people who have experienced it, and wondered if there was any hidden gems for things to do. Sorrento also looks beautiful and I have heard great things about it. I just thought I would ask for some advice from others too, no harm in that :)

Thanks again everyone!! All of your insights have been brilliant!

I did not mean to sound snippy--I just think it helps to know one's interests and motivations when giving advice, especially for a honeymoon. All of the main attractions were pretty well known, but I highly recommend doing some of the hikes. And it is a bit of a slog from Sorrento, but Paestum is amazing.
Don't discount the transport issues in this region. I have read often that early September is still fairly busy. You will be on a bus or ferry --a lot--for day trips. To me, that is more unpleasant than moving my things to another town, but everyone has their own preferences. If you book early and stay in one of the less famous towns, there are bargains to be found along the Amalfi coast.

Rachel, would be good to get Rick's Italy guide now (free from your library) b/c it can help you decide where to stay.
Sorrento has always been considered, and known for, being the best base for visiting the area. It is a hub for all transport (train, bus, boats) and is beautiful. Have a great trip!

valadelphia, don't worry I didn't think you were being snippy :) Things can always be misconstrued over the internet! Thank you for your advice, and I will deffo speak with my partner about staying in different places or whether he would prefer to stay and use it as a hub.

Susan, thank you! I most deffo will do that, and I am seriously excited about planning!!

Just a thought. If you were considering a second base beyond a place like Sorrento, and if you wanted to visit Paestum at some point--yes, it is amazing--two or three nights in the little city of Salerno might be fun. Less than an hour from Paestum, an hour from Amalfi, Pompei and Naples, it's also a tremendous logistical base. It's not touristed up so (in theory anyway!) you see the real Italy, and I can tell you from experience the food is on a par with Sorrento, maybe even better with more variety. Check it out!

Enjoy your planning!
