Honeymoon in Northern Italy

We are currently planning and booking our two week October 2017 honeymoon. It is second marriage for both of us so the honeymoon needs to be more about enjoying some limited locations in Northern Italy vs. seeing every site available. :)

So far we know we are flying into Milan for 2 nights, Lake Como for 4 nights and on the back end of the trip we will be doing 3 nights in Venice. It is the middle 2-4 nights that we are still building. At first we were thinking of going from Como to Garda to stay on vineyard for a night or two but wondering if that's more of the same (i.e. Como) - not that that is a bad thing! But we do love the idea of trying out multiple vineyards or adding a bit more diversity in location to the trip after Como. Of those 2-4 nights, we will probably do at least one night in Verona but stuck on how to build itinerary between Como and Venice.

So looking for opinions on what we can do between Como and Venice to fill in those 2-4 nights that might involve some limited town hopping (dont want to hit 4 different areas) but still allow us to maximize Northern Italy....include one night in Verona...and drink and eat :)

Thoughts?

Rachel, if possible, shift the order of your trip by beginning in Venezia. Getting out of Venezia for international flights can be cumbersome.

Not in a straight line, but Bologna or another town in Emilia-Romagna might fit. For smaller cities, Ferrara or Ravenna. All have great food and wine.

Four nights is quite a lengthy stay on Lake Como, but then it's your honeymoon. Congrats.

Milan (3N) with a day to Bergamo
Lake Como (3N)
Verona (4N) with days to Lake Garda, Vicenza, Mantova or Bologna
Venice (3N)

From Verona by train it is only ...
13 mins to Lake Garda
24 mins to Vicenza
46 mins to Mantova
50 mins to Bologna

This is worth emphasizing. Before making definite plans, see if you can fly into Venice, and if you can't, check the departure times for flights from Venice to your home airport. They can be shockingly early, and getting to Venice airport early requires a long boat ride or a very expensive water taxi (over €100).

There are seasonal flights from Venice to JFK, Philadelphia, and Newark;, these leave later. But I don't know if they're still on in October. Other flights from the US to Venice change in another European hub (Frankfurt, Munich, Paris, etc), which is why they have to leave early, to connect to the US-bound flight.

Agree with poster who thinks four nights is a bit much for Lake Como -- but it is a great place to relax and do lots of nothing. As the Italians say "Il Dolce Farniente" (sp?) which means "The Sweetness of Doing Nothing". One night in Verona sounds about right, but three nights in Venice might be short changing a really great city. With three nights you really only have two full days and parts of two others depending on arrival / departure times. Since this is a honeymoon trip, in Venice splurge and have an outside sit down drink at one of the cafes at San Marco with an orchestra and maybe dance a little. A little expensive, but unforgettable. Love long and prosper.
