My fiance and I will be travelling to Italy in late September. As of right now we are flying in and out of Rome and we will be checking into our room on the 20th at around noon. We will then spend 5 nights. Then we will be heading to Venice for 3 nights. After which we will be heading south. We cannot decide whether we should stay in Amalfi or Sorrento. We will be staying there for 3 nights as well. Then heading back to Rome for the flight home. is this doable with the time we have? We were also going to fly from each of these destination to the next. Is this a good idea?
Your itinerary has a generous amount of time in each place and with flying you will travel quickly and should be fresh on arrival.
I do scratch my head regarding your math. Usually, my calculation is N nights equals N-1 full days, but then I lose time travelling by train or car.
Our recent trip included 3 nights Venice and 5 nights and it was just enough in each.
We also did a shore excursion of Sorrento, Positano and Pompeii while on a Med cruise. Our driver advised us that if we ever come back to always stay in Sorrento and just visit the Amalfi because Sorrento is beautiful in its own right, is much bigger with much more interesting things to do and is way way cheaper. In the limited day that we had, i see no reason to disagree with his advice. BTW, while he described Sorrento as Heaven, he called Naples Hell. From the highway, Naples did look like a ghetto. Going through the tunnel from one to the other was like night and day.
Gary & Caissie,
I'm also confused as to the # of nights vs # of days...
Anyway, if you haven't booked your fights, I'd suggest flying into Venice then traveling South & flying home from Rome or Naples.
By flying this way (multi-city option), you avoid wasting time backtracking.
How many nights will you be on the ground ( not counting travel days to/from home) in Italy? 11,12 or 13?
I couldn't help but notice that you will not be visiting Florence? Have you been to Florence in the past?
Thank you for your advice. We will be on the ground for 12 days. No we have not been to Florence. We just wanted to make sure we had enough time in the places we visit. We don't want to have to rush. That's why we have only chose the three places to visit. Where did you stay while in Sorrento?
Hi Gary,
We are honeymooning in September and have a similiar itinerary to yours. We are flying into Naples and staying in Positano (an amazing B&B called Colle Dell'Ara - google it!) then we are taking the train from Naples to Florence - staying for 2 days and then a train from Florence to Rome - staying for 3 days and then we fly out. I'm not sure flying from city to city in Italy would be cost effective? From my research it seems like "the way to go" is definitely by train. Check out the http://www.trenitalia.com/ website.
Good Luck!
Hi Gary
My (newlywed) husband and I are also going to be on our honeymoon in early September. We are planning 3 nights in Cinque Terre, 7 nights in Tuscany/Umbria and 3 nights in Rome. I am overwhelmed with Rome - what hotel are you booking and what determined which one you picked? There are 8 million of them. We want to stay in an area that allows us to really experience Rome to avoid having to take busses or trains (we want to walk not only for safety but for fun).
We didn't get a hotel room in Rome. We actually used airbnb.com. You can actually get an entire apartment for less than the price of a hotel, in some cases. We have a full kitchen, so we don't have to eat at a restaurant every night. We just chose one that was close to the centre of the city. There are many places available on that site. If you decide to go that way, just choose one that has some good reviews from people that have already stayed there. It's a pretty great way to travel cheaply and still have a nice place to stay.
I will check out the train schedule too. Thanks for the advice!
