Honeymoon in August - Rome / Tuscany / Umbria / Florence 11 nights

Hello!

I am trying to plan my honeymoon next month (unfortunately wedding planning interfered with travel planning!). We know we are flying in and out of Rome and that's about it.

We are thinking to immediately take the train up to Florence where we would spend 2 nights and then head to Tuscany for 3 nights, Umbria for 3 nights and Rome for 3 nights. When we're in Tuscany and Umbria I'm hoping we can find some places where we can truly unwind and get away from the crowds. We would also have been interested in going to the coast in lieu of one of the other spots but thought that that might be too much transit in between spots but if I'm wrong, please let me know! We're potentially interested in Volterra in Tuscany... Are Montalcino or Montepulciano potentially very crowded? Any recommendations for Umbria?

I know we're last minute but any tips would be greatly appreciated!!!

Thank you VERY much!

Best wishes on your wedding!

Since you will be there in August, I'll advise not to go to the coast because that is where Italians go for their August holidays, and many people from elsewhere in Europe are also drawn to Italian beaches & coastal areas.

Umbria will probably be quieter than Tuscany in general, but there are Ecoturismo resorts in the Tuscan countryside that are also designed to help people unwind. In Florence and Rome there will be crowds, as well as some restaurants and shops that are closed for vacation (chiuso per ferie).

Best wishes. May you love long and prosper!

Your current schedule has three location changes. Every time you change locations you almost always lose more time than anticipated. Even if you have a car (which in my opinion really isn't needed) there is still the packing up, checking out, travel time itself, getting to the new hotel, checking in, and unpacking. If you are going by train there is the additional time getting to the station and the waiting time.

Considering your limited amount of time actually "on the ground", my suggestion is that you limit yourself to only two locations. The first should be a place where you can unwind and recover from all the stress the wedding will bring. The exact location (and there are many possibilities) should depend solely on your interest.

After unwinding and getting back to normal return to Rome for the second half of the trip and the flight home.

Take a look at Montefaclo in Umbria. It should be less touristy than other places. It is small and easy to get to.

Orvieto is very popular in Umbria, as is Todi.

Hi Carolyn- we were in Assisi in Umbria last month. It is an UNESCO world heritage site and very clean. We took the train from Florence on a day trip but did not have enough time there. Our guide told us it is very quiet in the evening after the tourists leave and that there are some very nice inns/B and B's there. The town is on a hilltop and has a wonderful view of the plains below. Much of the shopping is for religious articles so not a hot spot for that. The town has been there since Roman times. One tour I would have loved to do there was the "Underground Tour" where you walk beneath the layers of the foundations of the old Roman layers and the subsequent layers built on top of them. It looked like there was enough room to walk without having to bend over (or crawl!). Good Luck on your wedding and travels! Jeff.
