Honeymoon in Amalfi

My fiance and I still working on planning our honeymoon to the Amalfi Coast, and would love some feedback on what we're planning! We'll have 10 total nights for our trip. We're thinking about spending 7-8 days in the Amalfi region and the remaining time in Rome. We're a little unsure still of which cities to stay in, as we don't want to traveling to too many hotels. Here's what we're thinking: Night 1: Sorrento Night 2: Sorrento Night 3: Sorrento Night 4: Positano Night 5: Positano Night 6: Positano Night 7: Ravello Night 8: Ravello Night 9: Rome Night 10: Rome Would it be better to have 1 or 2 main cities for our home base while in Amalfi, or does this seem reasonable? Thank you in advance for your feedback!

Getting old, for once, I am saying that your plan looks very reasonable. Personally I would cut out Ravello and spend the days in Rome BUT we like Rome a lot - three weeks over the past six years or so.

I agree with Frank that you need more time in Rome, but I would take it from the days you alloted to Positano. In answer to some other questions about the Amalfi Coast, one poster recently said Positano was just a bunch of women's shoe stores; and another, that it was just women's swim wear shops. We found that to be pretty much the case. We were staying in Amalfi. After half a day in Positano, we left and took a boat to the Emerald Grotto (don't bother, very cheesy). And, while I know there are beautiful views, the same is true for Ravello, maybe even more so. Between Sorrento and Ravello you can easily get to all the places you would want to go. No need to eat up time with an extra hotel change.

Congratulations on your honeymoon Molly! I don't like to waste my precious vacation time checking in/out of hotels and packing/unpacking. So my trip in June I chose to rent an apartment for a week in Positano. I chose Positano for several reasons, including easy transportation to other parts of the Amalfi Coast, activities and nightlife in Positano, the beauty of the town and the high recommendation of an Italian friend who lives on the Amalfi Coast. So my recommendation would be to rent an apartment in Positano for a week and spend the rest of your time in Rome. Here is what we rented: www.villalesirene.com Ciao from down the road in Portland!

Hi Molly, I would recommend 2 or 3 nights in Positano. Take a day trip from there to Ravello and Amalfi (take the boat from Positano and then bus from Amalfi to Ravello). Ravello is beautiful, gorgeous views. Then spend 2 or 3 nights in Sorrento and take day trips to Pompeii and Capri. Then I would spend the remainder in Rome. Have a great time on the Amalfi Coast. Thanks everyone for the feedback! I should have mentioned that we've already spent some time on a previous trip in Cinque Terre, Florence, Venice, and Rome, so we we're hoping to relax and focus on the Amalfi Coast for this trip. Do you all think it's too long? We've planned to spend most of the days taking day trips around the area. Thanks again for all your advice! :)

Too long? You're on your honeymoon! I'm renting a house in Positano this July for a week as well. From there we can visit Amalfi, Capri, Sorrento, and Ravello using the hydrofoil and SITA bus. I'm not sure you need to stay in 3 different hotels along the coast, maybe just pick Sorrento or Positano. I went last summer and fell in love with Positano on a day trip and vowed to return!

You might want to think about spending a little more time in Rome. There is so much to see and do there. You can see a lot of the Amalfi Coast in a fairly short span of time. In fact, you might get a little bored after a while. They do tend to roll up the sidewalks in the tourist hotspots once the tourists leave for the day. However, that may be just what you are looking for. I have used Amalfi as a base and also Sorrento. Sorrento is definitely a good place to base as a jumping off point to see the sights and villages along the coast as well as Capri and Pompeii. Sorrento is a bustling little port city, and you will have more choices for food, shopping, transportation, and entertainment after-hours. However, it's not nearly as quaint and quiet as Positano or Ravello (for sure!).

I also would take a night from Positano and either give it to Rome or Sorrento. Particulary if you are flying from Seattle you will most likely arrive late, tired and jet lagged so the first day could be mostly lost. Sorrento is fun with alot of options and a great transportation hub to day trip from. We spent two nights in Positano and it was enough. I haven't been to Ravello. I love Rome and would want one more day there, even though I've been there many times before, but as you've already visited it you can better judge that. As you are travelling from Ravello to Rome you will most likely end up with a dinner and one full day in Rome with your current plan. What a wonderful honeymoon.
