We'll have our own car, and want to drive the countryside and maybe visit a couple of cities, any suggestions near or around Greve that would be good stops? Thanks!
Radda, Panzano, Castellina, all the hill towns. If you are going to go into Florence or Sienna, leave the car and take the bus in. You will be in the perfect location to grab a map of the Chianti Black Rooster trail, if you are into wine. Just make sure that you make appointments at the wineries, as most of the don't take drop ins. One that does though is Castello d'Albola and they also give guided tours at set times daily. I would definitely go there for one of the large scale winery visits.
Thanks April..These small hill towns, will we be able to drive our car and park in these towns? Parking outside the city walls? Thanks again :)
Matt--
All three towns mentioned are easy to find parking.
Castellina has lot on main road just north of main square (about 200 yards), Panzano has lot on main road just north of main square
(about 100 yards) and Radda we usually just find a spot to park on the main street going thru town.
Get a Chinati map from information or you can find in some shops and drive all the back roads. A lot of fun--like the road from Panzano to Volpaia--mostly not paved but very drivable and beautiful wooded scenery. Also check out Lamole just south of Greve.
An "exciting" drive up the hill and a nice restaurant to eat "Ristorante Lamole". Gorgeous views at sunset for dinner. Stop at Vignamaggio half way up the hill for a wine tour.
Get a copy of "Too Much Tuscan Sun" Hilarious book by an Italian guide about taking people around Chianti and Siena. It will give you some good ideas about where to go and you will not stop laughing while you are learning.
you should get a guide book or two; read the descriptions of the various cities and decide which ones you'd like to visit. Coordinate with a map so that you're visiting towns that are nearby. We found it was easy to visit one in the morning, then either stay for lunch and go to the second or go to the second and start with lunch. If you want a bit longer drive thru the countryside and hills you could go to Urbino as a full-day trip. On the way there you'll also go by several towns that look interesting to at least stop in and walk around.
Be open to serendipity, too; a few years back we were staying in Greve and were driving to San Gigmanano; on the road just outside of town there was a festival of some kind going on. We stopped and had a great time walking around, sampling food, etc. at what turned out to be a celebration of some local cheese.
