I'm researching for my trip to Italy. This time, we want to see Pompeii. For those who have been there, where did you stay when you visited? I have not been any farther south than Rome and am interested in what the opinions are about places south of Rome in particular; but any opinions are welcome!
Thanks!
We spent six nights south of Rome in March of this year. We spent three nights in Sorrento and used it as a base for the Amalfi Coast. From there we also visited Pompeii. Then we spent three nights in Naples and from there visited Herculanum and explored Naples. Depending on how much time you want to spend in the area and what other sites you want to visit, either Sorrento or Naples has easy access to Pompeii via the Circumvesuviana train.
Robyn, Sorrento is absolutely the best "home base" for visiting Pompeii, Herculaneum and other sights in that area. It's a beautiful city! You might find it helpful to have a look at the Italy Guidebook to see if there are any other locations that appeal to you. Cheers!
