Home base in Tuscany

We’re planning a 3-week trip to Tuscany next August and are trying to decide where to set up base. There will be 4 adults and 4 children (all 5 and under!) so we don’t want to change locations. We want to be able to enjoy the town/village we stay in but also take numerous day trips to surrounding areas (probably even a weekend to Rome) - we will have a car.

Also, we will have the children with us so if you know of any restrictions on things we cannot do with children like wine tastings or other things we’d probably do while in Tuscany, please let me know.

What we’re looking for -
Small to mid-sized town/village
Place to rent - 3 bedrooms w/ AC, WiFi & parking.

Any location suggestions and/or websites to check for housing are most appreciated!

AC in a Tuscan village apartment will be a tall order.

We like Montepulciano as a base and have spent a couple of weeks there touring the area. WE like the location; the town is beautiful; not much in the way of groceries in the historic center but plenty of supermarket just outside either on foot or when touring, swing by one on the way back.

You are doing a lot of things right. You are getting an early start on planning and you are planning to use just one base.

I second RJean's suggestion of finding an agriturismo to use as a home base. Maybe you can find one with a pool. You may also be able to find a house to rent for that period of time. Finding accommodations with A/C might be sticky (pun intended).

Google "Farmhouse Borgo Castelvecchi". The offer a 3 bedroom apartment. They have a swimming pool and are just outside Radda. It looks pretty pricey, though.

You shouldn't have any problems with the kiddos at wine tastings, etc. The nice thing about having 3 weeks it that you can take a relaxed pace yet still see plenty.

There are so many excellent agriturismos !

Have a look at these:

Borgo Argenina - Elena cooks with all of her guests one night - it makes for a delightful evening ! Her breakfasts are homemade and you can hike up to the castle. There is no swimming pool, however.

Cretaiole - look at theisabellaexperience.com - Isabella has several properties and they are wonderful !

Frances Lodge - this is right above Siena so you have the farm experience, yet you can walk down into town and enjoy the town at any time without driving anywhere
