Home base in Southern Italy?

A month in Italy! My college-aged children and hard-working husband can never seem to be able to commit to a week or two in Italy so I am hoping to put down some roots, give the family my dates and let them come to me! I am planning to be in Italy from July 18- August 20, 2022. I am most interested in Southern Italy- islands, coast, Pompeii, and would like to travel
inland to the small town of San Fele, Potenza where my great grandparents were born. Ideally, I want to stay in one place for the whole time as it will get me the best rates. I don’t mind longish day trips and maybe even renting another room for a night here or there if that makes sense. I was thinking Salerno but the lack of discussions about actually staying in Salerno has me wondering… Naples? Amalfi? Also, I do know that it will be hot but I like the heat (that moment when you get into a super hot car in summer ahhhh) and I do not fear crowds (grew up on the boardwalks on the New Jersey shore) I would love to hear your ideas!

Amalfi = village Naples = major city Salerno = small city/large town There are some Salerno fans here. I only passed through/hung out during the day, but it's a pleasant, understated place. Perhaps the perfect place for a month, but I think I would get bored.
Which of those kind of places do you think you would prefer to be for a month? I'd consider splitting it in half, city + village. All the day trips would be tiring after a couple weeks, and transport costs might eat up any accommodation savings or at least make it more equal.
You might want to look into the transport options to San Fele to get a better sense of any logistical challenges.
Sounds completely wonderful though--perhaps looking at some accommodations will get the decision juices flowing.

We spent 2 nights in Salerno and enjoyed it very much
Easy access to Amalfi coast towns, direct trains north and south
Nice waterfront, less expensive lodgings and some very good restaurants, not many tourists at all

ETA
not sure I’d want to spend a month there but 2 weeks could work

Sounds like a fun trip, my only concern would be that southern Italy is very hot during mid-July through August. You might want to consider June just for the lower temperatures.

If those dates are the only ones that work then I would try to get a accommodation that was on the beach so you could cool off in the ocean and enjoy the ocean breeze in the evenings.

For our April 2022 trip, we are staying in Pompei for 4 nights - we want to see Oplontis, Stabiae, and Herculaneum in addition to Pompeii. The town of Pompei doesn't get a lot of love on this forum, but I have read positive comments elsewhere and I'm willing to risk it for the savings in hotel costs, and being able to sleep next to what I really want to see.

From Pompei, we are going to Salerno for 4 nights - base for Paestum, the Amalfi Coast, and Operation Avalanche sites (we are WW2 buffs). I had really wanted to stay in Ravello, but the hotels I wanted were way beyond our budget. With that said, the more I read about Salerno, the better it looks to me.

Staying in Salerno would be easiest if you’re going to San Fele for the day. There’s a train that runs every four hours to Bella-Muro according to Rome2rio, but I would research that further. You would then have to take an expensive taxi ride to Bella-Muro to San Fele $55+.
Salerno is about a 45-minute direct train ride from Pompeii. If you can fly into Napoli Capodichino Aeroporto (Naples) you’ll have to transfer at the Napoli Centrale station that can be done in 1h to get to Salerno.
If you fly into Fiumicino Aeroporto (Rome), you’ll need to transfer at the Roma Termini station to get to Salerno that can take as little as 2h 45m or up to 4h, depending on your arrival time. Your other option is to do the above but then hop on a ferry in Salerno to Amalfi or Positano.
Staying in Naples would not be as convenient to San Fele compared to Salerno. You might want to consider sleeping in more than one location.
