Home base in Sorento or Positano

Plan to spend three nights in Sorento or Positano... day 19-22 of our planned 26 day Italian adventure. (late May 2023). Will be traveling from Naples (1 night). Only known idea is to include Pompeii as a day trip.

Not the lightest weight of travelers... three luggage bags likely. Have looked at hotels in Sorento (Hotel Antiche Mura or Hotel Minerva) or Villa Rosa in Positano. What considerations should I take into account when trying to determine which of these two lovely spots would be the best place to call home for our time on the Amalfi Coast? Will be departing day 22 to Rome to finish our adventure.

If you pack heavy you want the most convenient spot which is Sorrento. Take a taxi from your hotel in Naples to Molo Beverello, the port where ferries run between Naples and Sorrento (45 minutes). I heard there’s an elevator at Sorrento’s port that’ll take you to the top of the town, otherwise you have to carry luggage up-stairs that was challenging and I pack light.
I wouldn’t take the Circumvesuviana when carrying a lot of luggage. Regional trains are notorious with pick-pockets that ride these rails and can easily grab a bag when hopping off.

With just 3 days on the Amalfi Coast, staying in Sorrento will make getting to Pompeii quicker ( 45-60 minutes by train) and easier than Positano. I’d take the 80-minute ferry to Positano from Sorrento as a daytrip. Sorrento also has ferries to Capri taking 20-30 minutes, adding it as another daytrip possibility. Finally, it will be more convenient for your return to Rome if you’re staying in Sorrento.
