Holy Door of Papal Basilicas

Hi All,

I just hear the info from my mum who got the info from her peers as well that the Holy Door is currently opened earlier than scheduled by the current Pope.

I am not quite understand about this, I googled and I found contradictory facts with what my mum told me. Well my mum only hears from her friends and I think it's also the first time she's hearing about Holy Door. She only knows about 1 Holy Door which is St Maria Maggiore that is opened before its 25years time (I think last time it's opened in 2000). So I need to get the facts straightened out.

What I got from internet is:
1. There are Holy Doors in each of the 4 major Papal Basilicas in Rome. They used to be opened once every 100 years but now in accordance to the Pope's will
2. if 1 Holy Door is opened (St. Peter's Basilica done by the Pope) then other 3 major Basilicas would follow (done by the cardinals). The Pope would open St. Peter's Basilica Holy Door on Christmas Eve and would close it on the next year's Christmas Eve

My questions:
1 so are all Holy Doors in 4 major Basilicas currently opened which means they were opened on the previous year Christmas Eve and would be closed on this year's 24th Dec?
2 Would anyone know when would be the ceremony of closing the doors? Based on the 2000's Holy Door rites, St. Peter's was closed on 6th Jan with the other 3 churches closed a day before.
3 Is there any prerequisite to enter the Doors or we could just enter? Would there be a long queue for these as we plan to visit 3 out of 4 Major Basilica churches ie. St Peter's, St Maria Maggiore and St John Lateran

TIA

From the Vatican's news source: St Peter's door to be opened Dec. 8th:

http://en.radiovaticana.va/news/2015/11/17/holy_door_at_st_peters_basilica_unveiled_for_jubilee_of_me/1187618

Here are the dates for the doors at the three other basilicas:

http://civitavecchia.portmobility.it/en/itinerari/day/jubilee-2015-four-papal-basilicas-rome

The Catholic news service states that to eliminate long waits, there will be a free reservation system for pilgrims wishing to enter through the door at St. Peters but no reservation is needed for the other three:

The doors will remain open throughout the Jubilee Year: St Peter's door will be closed on Nov. 20, 2016, and the other three on Nov. 13th, 2016.

If I have correctly understood, the Port Santa at St. Peters' will be opened this year on Dec. 8th at 9.30am and closed in December 2016. The calendar of doors' openings is at: http://www.iubilaeummisericordiae.va/content/gdm/en/roma/grandi-eventi.html
(please note that S. Maria Maggiore's door opens on Jan. 1st)

Due to security reasons, all pilgrims entering St. Peters' door need to be registered in advance: http://www.im.va/content/gdm/en/news/evidenza/2015-11-09-pcpne.html

Hi All,

what would I do without this forum. i was definitely misled. St Maria is not even going to open until 1st of January

i have just registered for the Holy Door and boy it's not a straightforward registration at all. waiting for it to be confirmed. hopefully they still have the slot on my expected visit time

I only register for the Holy Door though. There are other registrations for the Jubilee Events ie. Jubilee for Divine Mercy, Marian Jubilee etc
May I know what the Events are? Are they Liturgical Mass?
EDIT: the Events just starts on January 2016
http://www.catholicnewsagency.com/news/heres-pope-francis-schedule-for-the-jubilee-of-mercy-12287/

Also I got this information
JUBILEE OF MERCY
ROME, 12/08/2015 - 11/20/2016
It's important to know that the final part of the route, from Castel Sant'Angelo to the Holy Door, is reserved exclusively to registered pilgrims. That's why all pilgrims who intend to cross the Holy Door must necessarily register on the official site of the Jubilee.

So would regular tourists not be able to use this path (St Peter's - Via della Conciliazione - Castel Sant'Angelo - Ponte San't Angelo) during the Jubilee Year?

I live in Italy, I read Italian newspapers and infos about the Jubilee are quite scarce. First, the Jubilee was unexpectedly announced by pope Francis on March 13th, so any form of advance long term planning was impossible. Medium term planning was also very difficult as the Rome municipal administration was in disarray till the end of October when half of the city council resigned to force the mayor out. Now the city is run by a temporary government commissioner and elections will be held in spring - but in the meantime very little was planned. Even last minute planning is difficult; attacks in Paris last week could frighten pilgrims so a smaller number of them is now expected; civil authorities will have to take care of security issues much more carefully than expected.

Hi lachera
thanks so much for the insight. i was thinking the same too actually that it's still the beginning of the Jubilee Year but i put that thinking aside and rather not to over expect things.
in regards to the attack, it could be a hit or miss for the pilgrims as more pilgrims might attend to pray for the current situation. hopefully the security is effective in tackling the issue.

Hi Kathy
you always have a very informative articles Dear :) hopefully everything will go smoothly and people could celebrate the festive season peacefully. i was thinking of going to the Jewish Ghetto for the 25th but now honestly re-thinking about it...but again i'd be on my holiday..

No reason at all to rethink it if it's safety you're worried about: there's nothing unsafe about that area. It's also reported to be a good spot for finding open restaurants when many others are closed for the holiday.
