Holidays in Italy

I understand that May 1 is a "special day" in Italy. Will this affect my plans for traveling within Italy?

I did a bit of research on this since I will be in Rome on May Day. In Rome there is a huge music festival that millions of people attend. I was in Paris years ago on May Day and discovered most of the museums and stores were closed but restaurants were open. I would expect similiar in Italy.

May 1 is indeed a national holiday in Italy; specifically, it is International Workers' Day, celebrated throughout western Europe. There are big parades in Rome and elsewhere. Some attractions may be closed, and you may have difficulty getting around. I would check my guidebook or the attractions' websites for specific closure information. If it's the start or the end of the holiday weekend, you may run into very crowded roads or trains.
