Holiday Trip to Italy

Taking the family to Italy over the Christmas holidays. Starting in Rome (Christmas) and ending in Venice (New Years with 5 days in between. We've been to Florence so no need to return this trip. We were thinking a couple nights in Sorrento then a couple nights in a town in Umbria. Love to have some suggestions based on the time of year we'll be there.

With only 5 days, I wouldn't go to Sorrento, it will use up half a day just getting there from Rome and more to get to Umbria. How about Orvieto and then Bologna. Or just Bologna. You can do easy day trips from there to Ferrara, Padua, Ravenna. I'm not sure Orvieto will be very nice if it's overcast or rainy.

If you have a car, Todi is beautiful. Or Assisi, Gubbio, Spello.

We were in Italy for 6 weeks starting on May 15 this year and ended on June 29th. What a wonderful experience. A place we want to return to is Sirmione...take a gander on Lake Garda. We stayed in the Hotel Broglia on the tip of the peninsula what a wonderful and exciting place...wish we could be back there and next trip in 2016 will include at least 3-4 days on Lake Garda so that we can take into consideration more local excursions. In Venice we also did the boat trip around the Islands and it was well worth the money spent. From Sirmione you can also make day trips to Verona. Have not been there in December so not sure on weather and such but anytime is great in Italy.
