Holiday Trip 12/28-1/7

I'll be touring Italy from Dec. 28th until Jan. 7th and am unsure of what kind of clothing I should pack. I'm only bringing a duffle and planned on two pairs of jeans with some leggings and long sleeve shirts, along with my ski jacket. I'll be in Venice, Florence, Torino and Rome.. Any idea of how cold it gets? Also, what would be a good idea as far as New Year's plans in Florence?

It's gonna be cold. For example, Venice is more northern than Halifax Nova Scotia, and Newark:), Turin hosted the winter Olympics a few years ago. Add some sweatshirts, some sort of head cover to your wardrobe, bring along what you would use in Newark in December and you'll be fine.

Thanks! Any idea what a smart New Year's choice in Florence would be?

This excerpt is from goitaly: Florence
Many restaurants in Florence will have extravagant meals, too. Be sure to reserve early. Fireworks will be set off at midnight and a good place to see them would be on one of the bridges on the Arno. There will be many private fireworks celebrations all over town, too. One of the most popular clubs in Florence, Tenax, holds a New Year's Eve party. As for clothing, it will be cold. Sweaters, gloves, hat, scarves, etc. are appropriate.

We've been in Italy for the past 2 weeks, and as northerners you are not going to find it cold. We have worn light gloves, occasionally a scarf, but our coats are not heavy, just rainwear we use in Portland. Mine is a nice long microfiber coat that resists rain and wind. It was great in Venice even at 35 degrees. We wear layers including lightweight, merino wool sweaters and fleece over cotton or jersey shirts, knit tops. Smart wool socks and perhaps goretex shoes are nice when there is rain. In Sorrento now and it is like spring in Portland, without the rain. :-)
So: layers, light coats, good socks and shoes. And I am sticking with my jeans, too. Only way to go!

Laurel, lucky you! You are missing some beautiful weather here in Portland, but it is always better in Italy!
