Hmm? Alitalia economy flights are listed as sold out

I'm starting flight tracking for an Italy trip next May 23 BOS-MXP and June 8 FCO-BOS. Alitalia has the economy seats sold out on Skyscanner but higher priced seats are available. Their website economy seats are available though. Is this because a flight sale will be going on later around November or December and they'll be using a consolidator? Always interesting to track flights and try to decipher the magic code for buying airline tickets. Things that make you go hmm. 🤨🤔

Sounds strange, but you're going in high season. I'd consider other airlines. True that Alitalia has direct flights to Rome from some cities. Look also at Delta, Air France, Lufthansa and Aer Lingus. I've flown Alitalia many times and now prefer to avoid it. Don't get me started but one example: Seats are very cramped in economy.

If you figure out how to understanding the airlines codes and pricing structures to your benefit, DON"T tell anyone. Just use it and smile as you make your next trip sitting next to all of those suckers. If you tell anyone, the computers will knows within the hour and whole ball games changes.

Just strange that a year ago, around the same time, I bought RT for $728.00. Yes, I agree Alitalia has some of the worse seats, food and service. I remember pushing the call button 3 times to get water for taking migraine meds. What other airlines do others like? How's KLM and layover in Amsterdam? I'd like to avoid layovers at Charles de Gaulle in France if possible.

I fly Delta/KLM nearly exclusively, as they fly direct to AMS from Portland, where I live. They tend to want to schedule me for layovers of just over an hour, which is possible within their guidelines but impossible in reality. So I just book connecting flights with longer layovers. AMS is a fine airport for layovers.

Thanks Patricia. I'm keeping my eyes peeled for any sales on KLM/Delta. Also, how are their economy flights? Shouldn't make a difference, I'm definitely taking a sedative and antiemetic on my next overseas flight. 😴 I never have alcohol and still end up getting sick. Last overseas flight I got sick on the plane and after we landed going thru customs. Nervous stomach I guess.

We are going on the Best of Italy Tour next month and during last February I looked for, and booked, tickets for the trip. I tried Alitalia but had problems with the website at different times accessing it, showing availability of the same flight changing back and forth or not showing at all, and other odd issues. I also read about their on again money problems. I didn't want to take a chance of something going wrong so I booked the trip with Swiss which was the cheapest of Lufthansa, BA, and Air France and they had flight times we like. We fly out of Boston also and are using the same airports as you are but going through Zurich each way.

Thanks Don! I'll look into Swiss Air too. I remember being worried our last trip would be cancelled on Alitalia. Maybe it's a sign to fly with a different carrier.

After multiple bad experiences with Alitalia, I will never use them again.

I think Alitalia is great for flights within Italy. I've never tried them overseas, but I can second the Delta/KLM suggestion. I've flown back to the States that way, and I found KLM to be very, very, very nice.

Hi, I'm flying out of Boston too. Last couple of times I was able to fly direct to Rome. Does anyone know an airline that still has direct flights from Boston? Thanks

Could be the whole bankruptcy/uncertainty thing?

To my knowledge no one else flies direct Boston to Rome, so if that is where I am flying prices being equal I would always choose a direct flight (even a little more uncomfortable one) over one with a connection somewhere.

That said, no one knows if Alitalia will exist in May / June of next year.
At some point they may disappear or may be purchased, in either case it is also possible someone else will pickup this Boston to Rome route and even honor tickets sold for it that were booked with Alitalia.
Keep in mind currently Delta sells this flight even though they don't fly it so if it goes away overnight plenty of unhappy Delta customers as well. KLM I think also sells it as their flight currently.

If there is no obvious advantage like the Boston example ; I would definitely book with another airline if I was flying in 9-10 months. No one can predict when the best fares or a sale will be, I suspect right now though is rarely if ever the best time to find the best value for a flight from the US to Rome in May/June of 2019.

Yesterday booked RT from SFO to FCO with stop at Heathrow. April and May. Less than $500 RT. Saw available via Expedia, Priceline, maybe other engines. Flights are with Virgin Atlantic and British Air. Was able to choose seats after via Virgin website. Meal, checked bag included. I was amazed. And grateful.

I would like to suggest Kayak for researching flights, and if you see something you like you may wish to sign up for updates from Kayak or the airlines that interest you most. I would echo some of the comments about Alitalia being a less desirable airline based on personal experience. While the food was good, service by call button was not...... and the lavatories became abdominal half way across the Atlantic. On the upside..... all the wine you could want, if you went back to the galley.

We like Aer Lingus. You would change planes in Dublin, which is an easy airport to navigate. Another benefit is that you can go through US customs and immigration in Dublin on the way home.

jdaybgeorge : that sounds like a great find.
Curious did you just get randomly lucky to stumble upon that or do you follow some sort of airline deal tracking website/social media, etc... that alerted you onto the sale?

I always hear about the great deals after they pass :(
