I am going to be in Potenza for three days in early September and want to take a day to explore the San Fele area where my grandfather’s family originated. Has anyone hired a private guide or used a service like Tours by locals? Any suggestions?

I'm curious about that, too. I'd like to visit some areas my ancestors came from (100% Italian ancestry here!) but not exactly sure how to get to some of the more remote areas and/or communicate since I think fewer people speak English in the smaller towns.

Gerrie, the first things I would do would be to ask your hotel to recommend a private guide.
Also contact the tourist office of Basilicata, which has an address in Potenza.
