hiring a driver vs renting a car

For part of our vacation to Italy we will be in Florence 5 days. For 1 day I would like to go to the Tuscan countryside. We have 4 adults and 2 children (twin boys almost 2 years old). If we rent a car for the day, can we get carseats with it? also any recommendations for where to go for the day? Alternatively should we just get a tour guide for the day? Any thoughts would be welcome. I know we need an international driver's license if decide to drive. Thanks in advance.

it's what you are comfortable with. Renting a car could be less expensive but you have to deal with picking up and returning the car, fueling the car and parking. A tour could be expensive but less stressful since you just show up. It's really a personal choice.

You'd just about have to rent a minivan, with 4 adults and twin two year olds. Car seats are available, however. AutoEurope.com can make arrangements. Most of their Florence rentals are thru Hertz @ 53 Via del Sansovino, Florence. You can also compare prices @ Hertz.com. Your best bet would be to drive down the Chianti Road, south of Florence heading toward Siena. You could visit San Gimignano and Volterra, or just ramble from town to town. Siena is also a very popular destination for a day trip, and is a 1 hour bus ride from the bus station next to the Florence train station. Buses there can also take you to San Gimignano. Many hill country tours are available out of Florence, but they're really not well suited to two year olds. The cities are up on mountaintops, and climbing hills and going down cobblestone streets is not easy with strollers. Have a great time though!

Plug the letters "ZTL" in the search box on the top right of this page. Don't even attempt to drive anywhere near Florence or Siena unless you have been fully appraised about these deadly "no driving" zones.
