Hire a car in Sorrento?

Hi everyone.

We are staying in Sorrento for a few days and are thinking of hiring a car to drive the Amalfi coastline. Do you recommend any particular drivers? Are we better off taking the bus instead?

Thanks!

A similar topic was posted earlier today.

We will be using Mariano Fiorentino at the end of June for an Amalfi Coast tour from/to Sorrento. He came highly recommended from a couple of people on this board. We were very impressed with his e-mails and his prices.

Another vote for Mariano - we just returned from Sorrento and we really enjoyed our day on the Amalfi Coast with him. He is very professional and personable, and is a native of that area so he has SO MUCH knowledge! Plus he is an excellent driver and has a very nice Mercedes van. We highly recommend him !

I highly recommend Antonio Prudente owner of JPS Service... email: jps@blublu.it We've used him several times. He and the men that work for him are all great. We're returning again this July and Antonio will pick us up at the airport in Naples :)

Mariano is charging our family of 5 €250 for a 6-7 hour tour, beginning (and ending) at our hotel. While that is a lot of money, it was the least expensive quote we received (some were as high as €400-500).

He was also extremely flexible. Most people do their tour beginning in the morning. We want time to enjoy the beach at our hotel and, hopefully, be a bit behind the throngs of people. So, Mariano is picking us up at 1:00 PM and bringing us back around 8:00 PM.

Mariano gets my vote, I used him for three consecutive days about a month ago, he is the best tour guide we ever used in Italy. Also his prices were more than fair. He gave four of us an eleven hour tour for under 300 euro.

Thank you everyone. I have sent Mariano a request. Any other recommendation if he is unavailable?

Many thanks.

We've booked the Monnetti family per the recommendation in Steves' Italy 2007 for a ten-hour day tour of the Amalfi Coast as far south as the ancient Greek ruins at Paestum in just a few weeks. Will be picked up at our hotel at 8 AM and back about 6 PM, but for that extended tour the cost for us both (total, for two, my wife and I) is 300 Euros, over $450.00. It's high, but I will say this: the peace of mind gained by not having to deal with buses and having complete freedom and flexibility (and not having to try to drive that crazy road ourselves) is worth it, we think. At least during the planning stage, this family-owned business has been wonderful to deal with. And when you figure they're earning just over $45 per hour for their time, the petrol, the wear and tear on the car, any parking to be done...it's not unreasonable, if you can swing it: www.monettitaxi17.it; monettitaxi17@libero.it

We used L & G Limoservice (www.lglimoservice.com) for a day trip from Sorrento. Luigi ,who owns the service was wonderful. He specializes in excursions on the Amalfi coast, and the areas surrounding Sorrento. We hired him to take us to Bisaccia, which is a small town east of Naples in Campania, on a genealogy search. Luigi was wonderful, so patient. We were with him for over 10 hours. His english was excellent and he was able to translate for us. I can't say enough good things about his service. Pleas email me is you have any specific questions.
