Will be spending 3 days each in Siena and Firenze in Oct. No car. We would like to allot one full day from each city for local hilltowns. Can we do San Giminano and Volterra via bus in a day? How? How best to do Cortona from Firenze? Other hilltown suggestions? Grazi.

San Gimignano is an easy bus ride from Siena on San Gimignano Bus Lines. Volterra is a bit more difficult to get to as you usually have to transfer at Cole d' Este plus, it's farther away from Siena. I hope that your full day is not a Sunday as bus schedules in Italy on Sunday are quite limited.

As well as SG, Montepulciano, &Pienza are easy by bus from Siena. Always have the return schedule as after 5pm can be a prob .
