We are thinking of renting a car for about 3 days and driving through the various hill towns of central italy and maybe staying in farm houses as recommended by Rick Steve. Any suggestions are welcome.
I was just in the region of Marche in April, I had no intentions of visiting this area until I came across a post by someone else on here. It was incredible! I stayed at La Tavola Marche, it is owned by a young American couple and they offer cooking classes as well. The website is http://www.latavolamarche.com/
Of all the places I visited in Italy this is the only one I feel the need to return to I loved it so much!
First, I would overnight in one location and visit the towns within an hour's drive (that will be about 60 kilometers). Whichever towns you choose to visit, plan on a maximum of two towns per day. That was the advice given to me on this board and that is exactly what evolved - even though I had hoped to visit more like 3 towns per day. It isn't necessarily the objects you will see in the town as far as architecture and museums. Those are important and I encourage you to visit them. However, it is more of the aura and ambiance your soul receives by walking down the street, smelling the smells, hearing the sounds, eating a meal, window gazing, and watching Italians live their lives. Plus, it is not necessarily easy to get to the towns and find parking, let alone knowing which way to walk to get into the town. You can usually find someone to point you to "centro" (center of town), but navigating around just isn't clear cut. I also advise having a GPS (we used Garmin) with Italian maps AND a Michelin road map. We used that printed map a lot because the GPS doesn't always take you on best route. I would also print out google maps of the towns you decide to visit so that you can have a sense of the roadways. Don't worry, you get used to all this. It works out fine (we were there two weeks ago) and it is awesome. ~Kay
