I am planning on spending one night in Lucca and two in Siena(one day by bus to Florence) and then two nights in the hill towns.I am thinking of MONTALCINO.I would spend one day just exploring the area.Does anyone have an opinion on Montalcino or is another hill town better? Thanks for any advice.jack
Go to abctuscany.com It will give you pictures and descriptions of the hilltowns and you can choose which ones you want to visit. I love this site and have choosen towns to visit from this site on our week in Tuscany. So many to choose from. Have fun planning.
we're staying in Siena for 4 days and doing day trips from there to cut down on one night stays, hope that works well. I understand Siena has great/reasonably priced bus connections to nearby towns. we didn't want the worry of a car. also there are some mini van tours to villages and wine country, I have found those are the way to go if you can find good ones. Rick mentions some in his Italy books.
Stay in Siena and do your trips from Siena. Why repack, relocate, again! We just returned and spent 5 days in Siena. It is lovely in the evening when the day visitors leave. We took side trips from Siena. We went to Montalcino one day. It is mostly a wine city. We gave it an afternoon and that was enough. There is much more to see and do in Siena. We also took a trip to Pienza, stunning hillside views and cheese tasting. We took a final side trip to San Gimignano, which is crowded and an afternoon is enough.
I would go pay Franco a visit in Civita, read more about him and this fascinating town at:
www.civitadibagnoregio.com. He is the host at the B&B as well as the Chef at the restaurant!
